Sharkey, You should have went a bit further north into Long Branch. It is amazing the amount of construction going on up there.

I remember when there were boat shows at the convention center. When I was young I remember going to one of the candy shops on the boardwalk and going on rides down on the southern end.

Great pictures Tim. After reading Panther's post, I remember seeing your "Bullet" boats at the Convention Center boat show back in the 1980's.

.

Since you asked Panther, here is a before and after picture of Long Branch:

My picture with the Bullet was taken in this spot off of Long Branch Beach.

Yes Bob, the Bullets were shown on the 2nd floor of the Convention Hall at the Boat Show.

Yes there is an extremely amount of construction going on. I personal don't think I like what is going up. Townhouses on top of townhouses everywhere.
The traffic there will be horrific once it is all complete.

Back around '90 the company that I was with transferred me from Cary NC (Raleigh) to the facility at GSP exit 100. After looking around for places to live, I moved into a new condo on Ocean Ave in Bradley Beach. I used to take daily walks with my dog up to Asbury and remember feeling like I was in some "war torn country". You could see how impressive the buildings were at some point but it was disheartening to see things in their existing state. I also spent many weeks at the B/C Hotel before my move which was a very nice place at the time. I believe they had just completed some renovations prior to my stays. Some of the best times that I had along the Jersey Shore we after Labor Day when all of the tourist left. The restaurants were terrific and inexpensive and I made many good friends in the surrounding areas. I also met my wife in some club in Longbranch. It was late Nov. and she was down from Kinnelon NJ with some friends and all I was looking for was a date for a company Christmas party.

I spent a few years there and was transferred to Charlotte and then on to Atlanta where I decided to stay.

Amazing how ocean front property can turn into a slum. Atlantic City would look the same had they not brought the casinos in.

Time for the bulldozers to help give the place a clean start.

True RonP,

But you know as well as I do, the casinos took care of what was around them.
There are still several areas in AC that are in desparate need of rehab.

Just look at that old hotel up on the inlet. Prime real estate there and it looks to be a welfare hotel.... :(

I could walk up the beach and be in asbury in 40 minutes..I've had lots of good times there. The Fast Lane, The pony, saw a few good punk shows at Convention hall....I for one am rooting for the place to keep coming back. It really has gotten a lot better in the past few years. I was taking my mom out for lunch this past mothers day, and she wanted to go to a place in Asbury :EEK!: It was nice as hell. Crossroads is still one of the better biker bars around....i hope that never goes anywhere.

One of the problems that theyre having with the redevelopment: many properties were bought and are now rehabilitated. New stores, restaraunts, bars, etc. Problem is, other real estate investors have bought up adjacent businesses\residental properties and are not fixing them up at all. They simply are waiting for everyone else to fix their stuff up to sell and make a bundle without doing any rehab.....problem is, is that there are too many of the 2nd investor, which is really putting the brakes on the redevelopment.

Still gotta root for asbury tho......
