Default Max towing width?

Of course I won't be buying another boat for a few years, but assuming you have a vehicle capable of towing, what's the max size/beam you can go before required to have a permit/wide load? Does this vary from state to state?

Thanks to anyone who can provide input...

Can you say " tilt trailer ". Seems like that would be the way to get around width problems,( but $$$$ for the trailer ) at least for a cat. Cool shot of "Pair-a-Dice" on its tilt tralier from PB mag.
