sailboaters are idiots

Right of way isn't enough, now you need to know how the wind is blowing.

I grew up a sailer, and I still do it on occasion.... I'm also CG certified in navigation as well as boat handling (both power and sail) and I have NEVER heard fo this. If this guy is dumb enough to be sailing in light winds on a boat that is HARD to tack in the first place (light winds making it worse) then I say let him try and ram one of those power boats and we'll see the Laws of Gross Tonnage at work!!! Moron.

By the way, I have registered on that site and will soon be giving this guy a lesson in sailing.

Is it illegal to accidentally melt a huge smoldering hole in their sail with a flaregun? I've heard those flares go out of date, and you need to use the expiring ones on occasion just for practice...

Re: sailboaters are idiots

Of course their idiots, they own blowbotes.

Their two main reasons for being:

quaint post card pictures and hanging laundry.

I remember a story in Boating magazine once about how their "quaint little regattas were messing up our Poker Run". I laughed for days.

That's why they have WHITE flares for practice/testing/sail melting. :blaster: McCollin I know you have depths of knowledge, I just mentioned white flares so no one gets the wrong idea. :)

After reading their thread and seeing tht somebody was using a powerboat ramming accident as ironclad proof that powerboaters were idiots, I just felt compelled...

I read your post mcollinstn on the blow boater sight, well said!!
Having done a lot of sailing in my days, I have an appreciation for both power and sail. That being said, as much as I enjoy sailing, given the choice, I much prefer blasting across the water at 70mph!!

Re: sailboaters are idiots

It's known fact to pass a sailboat on the leeward side.
You are not supposed to steal their wind.
Not sure how I know this, but I've known it forever.
Maybe learned it in the boating course I took when I was 9.

BUT... our boats are so low, that they probably don't even come
up to the boom of the sailboat. So no wind taken.

You're absolutely right. I learned that years ago when I took the boating course. It had be in 1965.
If you do have to pass on the windward side try stay as far away as you safely can so you steal as little wind as possible.

Remeber, sail boats have the right of way over power boats.
But, both operators must do everything possible to avoid a collision.

It's siuations like these that will cause manditory licensing of boat operators.

We call them Turn Bouys.

They think they have right of way when they are under power.

I hate sailors. I was 5 min away from an impound because of one of them.

Passing on lee side: It's courtesy, not regulation!
No where in the CG Regs does it make mention of it:

I thought the exhaust would give him a little more wind.

Light wind narrow channel, Hobies are best in the ocean when it's blowing 15 or more. When it gets over 20 it's probably more fun than most powerboats. The only time mine goes out is when it's too windy to really enjoy the Velocity.

Hyper-it's your responsiblity to be respectful. We have a bad enough image already and need to be curtious whenever possible-to everybody.

Also, though it may be true that a sailboat under power is considered a powerboat, a second set of guidelines comes into play, and the right-of-way goes the least maneuverable craft...(I would venture to guess that would be the sailboat with the 5hp kicker).

Reed Jensen 08-23-2004 01:08 PM

Re: sailboaters are idiots

We should start making little sails to attach to dock poles.... hold the dock pole upright when passing them... and then claim to be a "sailboat under sail"... just as they do when they are under power and have their sail untrimmed.... :D

I was borrowing a friends dock, and there was a sailboat next to his dock. I was putting a new blower in it because mine didnt work. He finds park patrol, tells them I have been there for a few weeks, and to impound the boat, I untie and leave. Turns out he was stealing the slip he was in and wanted the attention diverted away from him. I got to watch them cuff and stuff him though :D :D :D

Re: sailboaters are idiots

I've said it on other threads like this one. I love pulling a sailors punk card. After they flip me off for no reason other than they don't like loud, fast boats. I usually turn around pull right up next to them and "politely" instruct them to pull to the nearest dock so we can "talk" things out.

They're little b!tches! They don't like it when you confront them on their behavior though.

Re: sailboaters are idiots

I jsut got a lesson on tying dock lines from a sailboater in Leland. I was helping a cruiser tie off temporarily when they pulled into the dock. He had his way and that was the only way. He proceded to show me and a fellow boater not once, but TWICE how to correctly tie a line off. Since we were on vacation, I didn't say anything or get into it with him. However, I tied mine a certain way so the lines wouldn't rub on the crappy arsed docks and get slivers in the lines and fray them. The boat withstood 50-60 mph hour winds a couple nights before, so I think they just might hold okay. LOL!

I saw him giving others his "personal lessons" later on. It's as though he has nothing else better to do. Go figure, from a sailboater.....LOL! I was expecting him in the bathroom the next morning telling me I'm wiping the wrong way. :)
