"My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
http://www.wnbc.com/news/3689668/detail.html
NEW YORK -- A pleasure boat was boarded and seized in New York Harbor early Sunday, after three weapons, including a machine gun were found on board, the Coast Guard said. The 45-foot cabin cruiser, "My Way," was boarded after a Coast Guard boat crew spotted it operating without navigation lights near Governors Island around 2 a.m., said Coast Guard spokesman Patrick Montgomery. The boat's owner, Frank Mele, 52, of Weehawken, N.J., told officials as they were boarding that he was carrying a 12-guage shotgun, a .30 caliber rifle and an AK-47 onboard, Montgomery said. The boat, which was carrying 22 people, was then taken to a New York Police Department pier in Brooklyn, where Mele was arrested on a gun possession charge and the boat was taken into police custody. The Coast Guard did not believe the weapons were part of any plot, and was nothing more sinister than someone allegedly carrying guns illegally on a boat, Montgomery said. "The security net is, of course, much tighter this week, so we are looking much more closely at these things," he added. |

Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
Uhh, is it illegal to have guns on boats in NJ?
|
Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
New Jersey, New York, and D.C., are three areas where the "liberals" prefer only criminals to have/possess weapons. Law abiding citizens are deemed criminals for mere possession without a permit. Gun laws vary widely state by state.
To be safe, check with the State Police or State Attorney's Office in your state for clarification on legality of weapon possession. |

Well, now the terrorists know that they can take the "My Way" without meeting any resistance. Just like they took control over the Commecial jets that struck the World Trade Centers.

To be safe, check with the State Police or State Attorney's Office in your state for clarification on legality of weapon possession. You got that right,I have to wait 8 weeks to get my hand gun :( A guy I work with who lives in PA got his hand gun and a license to carry all in one day  |
Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
Here in Ohio, it varies depending on where you live. I live out in the country and can go and buy shotguns, rifles, and handguns all in one day any day of the week with no permits or liscences. One time I went to a Columbus gun store becase the local dealer didnt have the model of Glock that I wanted, afer I finish up the paperwork the salesman started giving me directions to some government building down town and proceeds to tell me that I have to go there in person and apply for a permit to purchase a hangun within the city limits even though I didnt live there.  and that I would have to wait a few weeks for the paperwork to process before I could pick up my firearm. needless to say I walked out.

I always enjoy asking the "gun control freaks" why is it that the states with the highest, per capita, ratio of guns to population also have, BY FAR, the lowest crime rates.
Not one of those liberal minded idiot morons has been able to answer that question yet. My political views are quite simple: don't screw with my guns and don't raise my taxes. |

The thing a criminal fears the most is an armed citizen. He fears it more than prison, the DA, or the police.

Most cruisers carry a small arsenal on board, don't they?
There is no way on God's green earth that I would take a trip for any extended period of time, on my own boat without a firearm. For me, extended is anthing overnight. |

Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
There is almost always a gun onboard my boat. I was boarded by the Coast Guard once and the first thing they asked when they came onboard was if there was any firearms onboard. I told him there was and where it was and they said we just wont open that compartment. No big deal in LA.

Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
I don't go out my front door, ANYTIME, without a pistol, usually my Baretta model 96/.40 calibre.
There are always two firearms on board my boat. I was once boarded by the CG and asked the same question. I simply answered yes, told them what and where. They thanked me for telling them and that was that. No problem at all. In Florida you can be "in posession of" without a concealed permit, if it takes two distinct motions to get to the gun AND it is not on your person. As in inside your glove box and inside a cloth gun bag. I have held a concealed permit for over 25 years. I call the Baretta my America Express Card, I never leave home without it (with two spare clips/loaded with Black Talons). |
Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
The coasties asked me once if I had any weapons. I looked around and said in a low voice, "What do you need?". :)

Wow, I had no idea that a lot of you would carry on your boats. It's such a PIA in Canada to have a hand gun it's not worth the effort. You can only transport a handgun to the firing range locked up, seperately from your ammo I believe. I'm pretty damn sure you can't bring one on your boat.

The report say's 22 people were on board? that can't be right? is it?
I never carry a gun, maybe it has something to do with where you live? |
Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
Back sometime in the 80's (I think), the US Supreme Court ruled that "home/domicile rights extended to an auto, boat, or airplane.
By Federal Law, whatever is good for your home extends thusly. Unfortunately, state laws sometimes screw that up. Again check with your individual state. In DC you can stab someone and get off easier than if they catch you carrying concealed a handgun without a permit, which I believe is all but impossible to get there. I get nervous driving on the interstate either in New York or New Jersey and will not even think about venturing into DC. Any place that gives more thought and consideration to criminals than law abiding citizens, I have absolutely no need to be. In 91' driving from Maine to Florida, I screwed up and took I-95 through NY city. In going through what I guess was the Bronx, it was like a 3rd world country. Burned out cars, fires burning in 55 gallon drums, people hanging around that I couldn't even tell you what planet they were from. So of course, where did we get stuck in a traffic jam, right in the middle of that mess. Was driving a Saab Turbo SPG with dark tinted windows. Twice groups of 3 approached the car, twice I lowered the window just enough to display the barrel of the Baretta. Twice they turned around and walked away. It was a little nerve wracking. Couldn't get out of there fast enough. Now I always take the Tapan Zee bridge and avoid that "culture". |
Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
Since it is an NYC new report and most of them wouldn't know a cap gun from a Howitzer I bet it was not a full auto AK. If you were going to have an illegal MG on board it would be well hidden and then you just show them the "decoy" guns. And if you were going to spend the cash and heartache to get a federal MG permit, why would you waste your time with an AK? I think the guy was going for "pizazz factor" and likely had an assault type shotgun, and Garand style .30, and a semi auto AK. Three guys standing on deck with those would tend to make even the most hardened criminals rethink their plan. I think that the farther you get from easy access law enforcement, the more likely you are to find weapons on board a boat. I have traveled on a 72 that could easily equip a platoon and keep them going for a 2-3 hour firefight :D

Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
I NEVER carry a gun on my boat, but then I only boat on inland lakes.
If I were to cruise "offshore" in a large cruiser, I would have enough firepower to repel a pirate ship! :) |

Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
I assume this boat "My Way " has nothing to do with the turbine boat up north does it ?
As for guns ,,,, My girl friend surprised me the other day with her new " PERMIT TO CARRY A CONSEALED WEAPON " PERMIT !!!! (She lives in PA. ) Then I had to buy her a new gun ....... Now I am getting my NON RESIDENT permit to carry for PA ! I can't get it in NJ where I live but I can get it in PA .... Go figure ..... |
Re: "My Way" Seized in NY. Weapons Found
A lot of larger boats ( yatchs, sport fish ,etc.) carry weapons of some kind . Beleive it or not , there are still real pirates out there ! They don't look like they do in the movies , but they still rob you , kill, you and steal yrou boat and sell it . Several of my brothers friends have had trouble with them off the coast of florida . Figure if your out cruising in a multi million dollar yatch, you are a target ! They say if you are being chased by them , the best thing to do is to run the boat around and destroy it . It is of no value to them at that point . This has worked for 2 people that my brother knows .
As for weapons on board , Get the LARGE flare guns . They work great and are legal everywhere ! Just get a bunch of them ! You point one of those in someones face , they will leave you alone ! |

Mossberg makes a really nice stainless steel 12 guage that they sell as a "line launcher."
If I shared waters with a third world country (other than Canada) I would carry one. But around here I'm ok with the flare gun and driving skills. Besides, every other boat is law enforcement around here. On Lake Erie the pirates only steal your beer, or occasionally your Bratwurst. Beware of Packinair. He will board your boat and steal your food. |
