Scope Poker Run
The Scope run was awesome! I have some pics if someone can show me how to "shrink" them for OSO. The run was about 100 miles long. I was in a friends 42' Tiger with Teague 1,000's and we ran about 90mph the whole way.
First boat to Catalina Island was NOT a cat!!! It was a 43' Scarab (think it was a Larry Smith) with big power. It ran 130mph and dominated alot of big powered cats. I think it was Pacific Marine's boat. There were 3 or 4 40' Skaters, a 36' Nortech, a few 36' Spectre's and some other fast cats out there. There were approx. 26 Fountains, 16 Cigarettes, 6 Hustler Slingshots, a few Formulas and various other V-bottoms. The Cigs dominated the other V-bottoms and the water wasn't rough at all. (weird!!) When we got to Catalina (we were probably the 10th boat) there was a Gladiator, 2 Hustlers, then us----(My friends)42' Tiger, (Ken Boyce) 42' Tiger, (HavasuCig's) Top Gun, (Bob Teague) 42'Tiger, (D-man) 38 top Gun, 1 Outerlimits, 2 more 38 Top Guns, and then the rest of the crowd. Tank and Kelly (fiancee) were on the boat with us and we had a great time. We went for a ride in Nort's 45' sunseeker and that thing really takes off! |

Great time!!!!!!!!!!! WoooooHooooo!!!!!!!! :D :D :D (voice is somewhat back now!) |
Re: Scope Poker Run
SCOPE deserves a great big Attaboy for that one, it was truly great from start to finish. Never saw so many BIG V's running so hard to Catalina, then on the Newport. Been running/racing here for many years, it had to be the smoothest ever. Good news, damage was minimal, safety was maximum. The entire affair from lunches, buffetts, and money raised for charity was outstanding. Great job SCOPE

Re: Scope Poker Run
It was a great time even though the water was flat. After riding in Nort's Sunseeker my other 1/2 is now talking about how nice a cruiser would be.

Funny thing is, the other side has even cooler graphics. . . totally different on the starboard side . . . This boat is WICKED nice. |
Re: Scope Poker Run
That is Peter Kompaniez' boat. Bob Teague maintained.

Re: Scope Poker Run
peter drove that scarab he said the whole run well over 100,, he said going out to the island they stuck it so hard on some of those from out of nowhere rollers, so hard that they slammed their helmts in the dash,. he said once he had to check and see if his teeth still in there..
that boat does hones 120 gps. and he is willing to hold it on,, its for sale i think jack who owns pacific marine said 475k.. its a rocket. same motors gibson has in his 39 mti. semper where was jay slightly cranky 42 fountain with stagered 1250's i know he would have been there in the front, i was runnin our little 35 as hard as my crew would let me and we wee runnin 75-85 and bumped 90 few times but started getting serious looks from my crew (wife) ohhhh, she was getting mad... so about half way we settled in and just stayed mainly around 70's and 80's.. |
Re: Scope Poker Run
semper i saw a link on here before re resizing pics might try a search and see if turns up

I saw him out there before the start, but I didn't se him or any other Fountain when we were going to the island. He could have been there before us, I don't know. |

Re: Scope Poker Run
That looks like the same boat but different name. The 42 that Teague was driving has Quad Rotors now (I think he said 1100's) and was told it runs about 105. Nice Boat!!

Nope....I didn't take it, but it was taken from my boat! Karol (said like Carl) Renau was on there with four other photographers. He's got some bad ass digital camera stuff!!! Something like $35K in digital camera equipment. Figure that boat was moving at +80mph, and he's holding a big lens camera while on the deck after Kenny plows a u-turn around us in his Tiger! LOL! |

Re: Scope Poker Run
Nort, was I correct in guessing your Sunseeker is about a 45 footer? How do you like it, how does it perform and what is the model number or name? I'd like to see the floor plan on their website. Are there any maintenance problems with a foreign built boat?

Re: Scope Poker Run
Here's the poker run review by Ron Songrath.......DEVIL MAN
=================================== The experts said it couldn't be done...... the doubters decided to go elsewhere, the disbelievers went bowling, but the loyal supporters and followers showed up 138 performance boats strong and enjoyed the 12th Annual SCOPE POKER RUN in Long Beach this past weekend. The SCOPE Board of Directors, led by poker run Director Wayne Lee were faced with their biggest challenge in 2004. Due to the City of Long Beach renovating the Downtown Marina Docks, SCOPE was forced to move elsewhere. SCOPE Poker Run's in previous years had attained near perfect reputations when it came to organization, enthusiasm and especially site location...enough that Powerboat Magazine recently listed the SCOPE Poker Run as the seventh best Poker Run in America!!!! So, the skeptics just did not think or expect Wayne Lee and crew to come through as in the past. Their only problem was that they really didn't know Wayne, Lu Lyall and the rest of the Board of Directors. This crew were the Red Adair's of the Poker Run industry...they just enjoy walking into that oil gusher that blew its lid! This fire was just not hot enough, the City and the doubters were throwing rocks at a man with a machine gun...they were just no match for the energy and dedication of the SCOPE crew. Through careful planning and preparation, the event site was moved across the Los Angeles River channel to the Coast Hotel...this allowed the attendees to eat, sleep, socialize and party in one location. The result was overwhelming as guests and members mingled and boated on a perfect Southern California weekend with the temperatures in the mid 80's and the sea's uncommonly calm. Guests arrived throughout the day on Friday and prepared their crafts for the run on Saturday. The weekend officially began with the Annual kickoff party at the compound site at the Coast Hotel...over 340 guests feasted on appetizers and displayed their abilities at the poker and blackjack tables. Along with the food and the games, many couples rocked out to the tunes and wore out their boat shoes as the music went on to the early hours of Saturday. Over $3,000 in cash was collected for the casino night in which 100% went to this year's chosen charity, the Children's Dental Center of Los Angeles. This center, also referred to as the Tooth fairy Cottage assists in educating underprivileged children and also has volunteer Dentists assist in the correction and aid of actual Dental care. (Fill in Name) was the high stakes winner for the evening by winning $63,000 in play money which equated in him donating the $500 cash prize back to the Children's Dental Center. Saturday morning hit Long Beach with a thick overcast but the event started promptly at 10:30 as the sun began to burn through the dense clouds. Bob and Andrea Teague, the Title Sponsors for the Poker Run for the fifth consecutive year lifted the red flag as the Fireboat halted the operation of their water cannons...95 boats streaked in a Southerly direction towards Avalon and card stop number one...another 40 boats headed towards Newport Beach and card stop number one for the short course boats. While the guests were on the water playing, things were happening behind the scenes. Sponsors were setting up their trailers and booths at the compound, the In-N-Out burger truck was putting the burgers on the grill and getting ready to serve over 400 Double-Doubles in a three hour span. Photo helicopters and photographers were following the fleet. The launch ramp crew was assembling hoses, buckets and towels in preparation for the mid afternoon surge of boats that required flushing and cleaning. After over a 100 minutes of high performance thrills on the Pacific, the fleet of boats crept past the Coast Hotel and headed back to their moorings. In minutes, Captains and crews had their boats tied up and were munching down the Double-Doubles. Many entrants took it easy in the afternoon with a brief siesta while others frolicked at poolside at the Coast Hotel. At six o'clock, party headquarters was decorated and ready for another wild night with over 75 silent auction items on display along with the winners trophies and flags. Teams opened their envelopes and kept their fingers crossed for that special hand. Over 550 guests and members enjoyed the catered dinner while waiting the outcome of the days events. Special recognition was given to the event sponsors who made the entire event possible. At 8:30, the playing cards were tabulated and Frank Beltran of Valencia was the Grand Prize winner with 4 Kings as he and his family collected the $10,000 prize. |
Re: Scope Poker Run
Second place and $5,000 cash went to Tom Zegers, and this year, there was a duplicate second place winner, Mike and Pam Meehan of Outerlimits Marine of Newport Beach. They also collected $5,000 in cash. Third place went to Gary Smith as he walked away with 30 C-Notes. Ron Tesarski was the fourth place winner and collected $2,000 and Allen Rice was the fifth place winner with an extra $1,000 in his wallet.
There were numerous other cash winners with $32,000 in cash distributed to the winners. That number was matched and increased by $4,000 with the Children's Dental Center receiving over $35,000 in charity....an all time record for a one time event. Once again, everyone involved walked away excited and looking forward to the Poker Run in 2005. For those doubters and bowlers, 2005 will be another banner year so continue to monitor the website for pictures from this year's event and keep your calendar open for next year's signature event. The motto for this year's event was SOLD, SOLD, SOLD as all the participants bought into the new concept and location and had the times of their lives.
