Well, you are all close... That boat is front 36' of the 44' MSV (Miller, Saccenti, Varese) named the "Tortuga" (turtle) that won Point Pleasant about a hundred years ago. It was 30 mph slower than the other boats, but they all got lost in the fog. Jean Claude is alive and old, and lives on Miami Beach. I see him every Ft. Lauderdale and Miami boat show. He was my Nova Marine dealer in France in the 60's.

Re: 36' Coyote - Anyone ever heard or had one?
Brownie, I'm confused. Are you saying that Jean Claude modeled the Coyote after a 44' MSV or that it wasn't designed/produced by him at all?

Re: 36' Coyote - Anyone ever heard or had one?
Jean Claude designed/tooled decks only, but history seems to always credit these builders for more. This is/was very common in Florida "warehouse" boat building. Most Florida performance builders today, are on someone elses hull. Mostly older Magnum and Cigarette derivatives. Ed

Re: 36' Coyote - Anyone ever heard or had one?
Right on, Ed. The MSV 44' mold was blocked to 36' and a new deck was built. It was a very good rough water boat.

The Coyote/Banana/Sonic worked and to this day is one of the best big water hulls around. T2x |

I can't believe it but I found this old Coyote media last night in the "archives" (a bunch of boxes of old boat stuff). It may be a bit difficult to read as it didn't scan very well. Just as Brownie said, design was based on that old MSV if you can read the scan. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that that old MSV design and Joel Halpern's Cobra "Beep Beep" had three strakes instead of two. Looks like Jean Claude chopped off the strakes and "re-attached" only two of them on the plug. And of course that deck is Jean Claude all the way....
Alcor - if you PM me your address I'll make photocopy of what I have and mail to you. Brownie - My dad said to say hello to you!! We saw you on an episode of Ship Shape TV recently... |

Alcor - Yes it was great growing up around all of this. No my dad never did anything more with Jean Claude or this hull after the first three boats. As someone said earlier, this is a great rough water design. When my dad raced, he got in on the tail end of the V-bottom era. When the 80's came along, you needed two boats - a V-hull for rough races and a Cat for calm races. Needless to say it became twice as expensive to campaign two race boats at the same time. Business pressures ended my dad's racing - he owned a large trucking business at the time and that needed his attention. Today he is retired. He and I went on to race cars in IMSA in the mid to late 80's...
Here's a pic of our cars back then.... |
Re: 36' Coyote - Anyone ever heard or had one?
I'm relatively new to the sport, (this is my first boat bought just over two years ago. However, from the first time we (my friend Ret & I) ended up in 4' - 6' foot seas skipping across the tops we couldn't believe how well it handled how stable it was. We both went on about what a great rough water hull it appeared to be which is important on a lake like Pontchartrain where it's tuff to find water deeper than about 13' or so, it's almost alway rough. We don't run 100 but in rough water, we hold our own in the poker runs.
Anyone else have history on the Coyote to share? |
