Bayliner...Whats in a name?

This company has had quite a history,
Speed records, Murder, Smuggling, womanizing, Helicopter prison escape attepts, Kilo runs made without competetor invites, and a long history of homosexuality. So I ask,
Bayliner... Whats in a name?

And yes, its slow at the office!

Classic offshore..... I just brought in 3k at 130 mph on my 2855 Ciera.
BTW whats a Ciera?
Every time we have to touch these things we cringe. What a happy day when your new customer comes up to you and says ' I just bought a BAYLINER'. Oh cool, have you thought about your next boat?

Cheers,

Andy

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

Bayliner did for boating what the Beetle did for cars... made it affordable for just about anyone to own a boat.

I still can't help but snicker when someone who is not a boater says "I was out on my friends boat the other day. It was a really nice boat... I think it was a Bayliner? Does that sound familiar?"

At this point, I usually just turn around and talk to someone else rather than laugh in their face. Really nice.... Bayliner.... can they be in the same sentence??

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

What do I like most about Bayliner's?

The fact you can smell the resin cure for a whole boating season if not longer. The cabin smells like a fiberglass factory for months. You also have the "feeling" your foot is going to go though the bottom every time you jump a cruiser's wake. Gotta love 'em.

Yes this is true the people that should not own a boat now can afford one

They all have the following carictaristics:

Cant launch
Cant Dock
Cant Follow Markers
Dont Understand NO - WAKE
Have Ugly Wives / Girlfriends
Always Drunk
Always WAY OVER LOADED 9 - 10 people in a 24'
Never have PFD's on the kids
Always Broke Down
Usually Fat Asses
Cant get the POS on the trailer at the end of the day

Am I missing anything?

I'd rather be on a Bayliner that runs, vs a Baja that doesn't. :D

I can envision it on a launch pad with boosters at it's side with that geometry easier than running on a lake.

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

OK, Laugh all you want. But I had a Bayliner trophy model 2002 with a 175 Merc. on it. It was my 2nd boat and I was like 18 years old. I bought it used and ran the piss out of it. I never had one problem with anything on the boat. I ran it in the Chesapeake all the time. I may have had an unusually good experience but, all I can say is what I truly experienced. I had a Baja 272 after that with a 502. I had a rather good experience with that boat also.
Ough yeah, I have been on many other high dollar offshore boats. So I have experienced them all. :D

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

Well, I own one!! Here's how...

My toy is a Donzi 22ZX with an HP500 carb.

The wife and kids really wanted something to ski and wakeboard behind. Humm, problem. The Donzi's minimum planing speed is 30mph, and it just doesn't work for skiing...

What to do? They won't leave me alone.. Sell the Donzi and get a ski boat???? NO WAY!!

So, I went shopping. New ski boats are BIG bucks. Rather than spend the 30-40k on a stupid ski boat, I could go bigger with my toy!!

I stopped in a Bayliner dealer, and humm, cute little 18 foot boat sitting there with a wakeboard rack..Salesguy said 10k with a 2k rack!! Brand NEW last year's model! How will this thing run?
They took me for a test ride. The thing planed out instantly, is on plane at 12-15mph, and tops out at 45 (speedo). Pretty good!!

I bought it.

The wife and kids love the Bayliner! It pulls my wife up easily on a slalom, stays at 32 well even in the turns, pulls a wakeboard or kneeboard down to 12. We've had the Bayliner for a year now, with zero problems.

So, the family is happy, and so am I! I still have the Donzi!!!

OK,I give :D I, owned a 24' Bayliner Cobra Offshore ,I was just out of High School this boat was red and white and looked like a Hot offshore boat well at least in Iowa in the 80's this boat was sleek and ran 61 mph had the merc,260 hp 350 Chevy with a alpha one drive .JT500 REMEMBERS THIS BOAT AS WE USED TO RUN AROUND QUITE A BIT IN THE GOOD OLE DAYS. :drink:

wished someone had a picture of this boat ,I don't think they made all that many, it was a great boat ,super light and fast for that size, with a full cuddy sink and a little sink bar,the dash was full of guages and had trim tabs to boot ,I paid 24,000.in 84 and the boat was built in 82 ,I have searched all over and can't find and pictures of this boat. But then came what we called the Clone Bayliners, all blue and grey 18 ft and all over the damm lake.they were a dime a dozen, with every idiot and there brother owning one.
This was the poor mans Offshore Power Boat. :drink:

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

Ya, they're pretty much junk, but In all fairness, the only one that I've had any experience with was a college buddy's 21' Bayliner that we used to ski behind and go island hopping with in Daytona. The boat was about 15 years old at the time, and for the four years that I knew the guy, that boat was ready to go each and every weekend...He didn't even change the oil in the damn thing, just gas. We beat the crap out of it, trying to break it...Sure, nothing worked and the interior all but fell out, but it just kept going. It was fun at the time.

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

.......Hi, I'm JT and I once owned a Bayliner

Yes Darin, Your 2350 cobra was quite the unit
back then ( it even had separate throttle/ shifter ! )

There was a little bit of fun had in my 1980 1950 eagle
closed bow, originally powered by a 260 merc.

I threw a couple of different engines at it, blew a drive,
raised the x dimension, added thru hull exhaust,
got it running in the mid 60's.

Sold it to a friend, he installed a 406" sbc dynoed around
415 hp, ( ran in the mid 70's to the best of our calculations.)

There were some pretty "priceless" looks had when it would
out run the "performance boats" of the day :D

Now, before you all start admonishing me about "safety",
etc. I was 21 years old then.......I'd never even heard of
external steering.

It's what got me started on this addiction :drink:

On a side note, I saw it out on the lake this summer,
still "puttin" along.

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

You know, for all the sh!t Bayliner takes I really cant say they are horrible boats. I've never heard from someone who "Actually owned one" say it was a total sh!t box. And I sure as hell would take one of those 45 or 50 foot ones...sweeeeet.

Bayliner got that horrid rap because they used to let their hulls sit outside (for loooooong periods of times sometimes) this somehow weakened the integrity and this is when you heard the stories of them cracking down the middle. That was back in the early to mid 80's. I don't hear about many newer Bayliner's having any probs.

Most people can't afford a 70k SeaRay or Fourwins. Whatever, it's not like they make offshore racing boats and compared to the $500k+ Offshore boats of today.

Oh, by the way...Matt, you're out of control! :drink: :drink:

i know it goofy but its better than sittin around. and we can pile 10 people easy on it,
it doesnt get any use in the summer really,, as the fountain is what we use when its nice.

Re: Bayliner...Whats in a name?

Never had a Bayliner, but once when I worked at a marina as a detailer, I heard the owner was looking for a new salesman. He jokingly said if anyone comes in and says that they had worked previously as a Bayliner salesman then they would be almost certain to get the job. He believed a Bayliner salesman could sell just about anything or for that matter any type of boat to just about anyone. :D
