This guys a stroker. I do this for a living and have never had someone ask to bring the boat to them. Tell him to come to you to look at the boat and test run it. If he buys it you will pay for his hotel and deliver the boat within a week. This is the way I have done it with my customers and those of my salespeople for 10 years.
Worst case is no deal. Best case is you are out another 200 or 300 bucks.

Take the $500 and arrange to meet halfway. You'll still end up pocketing money for your effort. Perhaps meeting at Lake Gaston for water test? Otherwise it's how confident are you in your pitch about the boat to him, and how motivated he seems. If he's willing to give up $500 then you could reasonably assume he's motivated and should understand it's an older rig that's been taken care of.

Well, now that i read everyone Else's point of view i have to change my opinion to making him come see the boat at your place
as stated before if he's really serious he'll make the trip plus the offer to deliver it upon completion of the sale is more than generous enough.

Thanks to everyone that responded. After a day of many headaches, I am staying with my initial offer to bring the boat to him after he comes to S.C. and we strike a signed deal. Once again thank you all.

Jan,
Sorry I just now read this, but here is MY opinion. If the guy IS really serious about the boat, he should be ready, willing, and able to come see the boat. How many times have you bought/wanted to buy a boat and could not stand it to wait and go see it. If he doesn't have the time to even come look at the boat, what makes him think he'll have time to use it. Other than that, he should come to you and put up 10% deposit BEFORE the boat goes to the water. My $0.02
