It's not an Apache but...
2 Attachment(s)
Here is my latest boat it's the old michelob light race boat 1977 38' Larry Smith scarab full stagger,3a drives, kevlar and 3 man bolster. It's needs some work plus engines (anyone?) and a trailer (again anyone?) should be a fun project. Anyone have any pictures would be helpful from the racing days.
By the way i still have the apache. |
Re: It's not an Apache but...

That was a great boat. Joey Ippolitto was the driver and it had Jack Stuteville as one of the crew guys, throttle I think. During that era Bobby & Jacks was THE place to go to have your boat rigged. Bobby of that duo, was of course Bobby Moore, who has a great rep as a rigger and throttleman. Budweiser put out a race poster with a nice shot of the boat. The gas tanks were made up to look like beer cans. There is also a drawing of the boat with an exploded view that shows the inside. If I remember correctly the engines were gold. The boat rolled in St. Pete in '78 and cracked in the Worlds in Mar Del Plata Argentina in December of '78. The waves were over 10 feet and many boats had big problems down there. Bill Elswick's 36' Cigarette sank and he and his crew were picked up by a passing freighter going to Buenos Aires. There were no safety boats allowed on the course, as Chile and Argentina were at war with each other at the time. That will be a great resto....Larry Smith always put out a superior product. Good luck Charlie Sr. |
Re: It's not an Apache but...
Thank's Charlie, great story. There is alot of gold plated hardware still in the engine compartment which i would like to get redone and shifters/throttles and bezels are also gold. The stringer system is also amazing the way it is designed , looks real strong.

My son thinks that we have that poster somewhere in our storage trailers. Also have some photos from that era buried somewhere, I'll try to dig them out for you. My favorite memory of that boat was the Bacardi race in '79. Coming back from Bimini, Joey was ahead of me as we made the turn in Lauderdale and headed back for Miami. The turn boat was about 1/2 mile offshore, so Joey turns and heads straight back toward Miami. I turn and head straight in to the beach. The water was so much calmer in there, I ran as close as I could and sometimes was inside the swimmers. Anyway, I finished third behind Betty and Billy Martin which left me tied for the Championship points with Betty. Joey comes up after the race and says that he never saw me pass him, where the hell was I? The following year at the drivers meeting there was a big rule made that no one was allowed to run on the beach and endanger the tourists. Hey it was racing, what do they want from us? Charlie Sr. |

These are from the NJPPC web site.
I'm gonna have to ask my bro to dig through the old box of pics to see if we have anything from the Long Islands racing days. |
Re: It's not an Apache but...
Cool piece !!! Good luck with the resto !

Re: It's not an Apache but...
Post #17 shows the number 3 boat as the same one you are restoring Ike. The boat below with Betty Cook is a different boat, although it is still a Larry Smith Scarab. It is the old KAAMA that Betty repainted when she accepted sponsorship from Bernie Little, also pictured in the ad.
The above photo shows both Bobby Moore and Jack Stuteville on either side of Joey Ippolitto. Great stuff, thanks for the memories. |
Re: It's not an Apache but...

Re: It's not an Apache but...
Thanks Charlie, great pictures, i was just going to ask you if you had any interior shots, they are going to be a huge help, love the stories too. By the way you offered help and i could use some $$$ :D Thanks again.
John (RA) I still have the apache, for now :p Rick (rchevelle) I still have it and it has your name all over it, "Apache Rick", sounds good. Jon (CM) I raced the M/L boat out of the inlet in NJ about five years ago with my 28 apache and it was a great race even though i spent most of the time in the air and when i saw it for sale i had to have it.I love the old school boats. How is your project coming? Mike (SS) thanks, you will be seeing some parts soon. Bob that should do it. Thanks everyone for the comments, should be alot of fun when its done. TRIPPS PM me with the details. |

I was just thinking about that boat the other day. Beautiful piece of classic offfshore history. Good luck and keep the updates coming.

Re: It's not an Apache but...
IKE, KE said he can duplicate the engines he originally did for the boat. May cost a couple bucks more today than back in the 70's. How cool would that be? May not be too cool over the course of a full summer though
