November Boating on Lake Travis

I just spent the weekend on Lake Travis in Austin, TX. The weather report said thunderstorms all weekend. But, I figured what do they know. I didn't feel a drop of rain all weekend. Low 80s daytime, low 60s night.

I'm going next weekend while I still can. I don't care what the weather man says. Anyone boating next weekend on Travis?

Not unless I launch the Formula with a Paddle! :( Still motorless or I'd join you. Maybe I cam kayak? :) I envy thee.

Formula 78

Unless there is a freeze, tornado or the boat problems I'll be there next weekend. If you want to go out on the boat for a while give me a call. The people I usually hang out with there are staying home so it's just me and the wife, Lisa. My boat is with Bob at Full Throttle Marina right now for a couple of minor issues. I plan on leaving San Antonio about 3:00 on Friday. I plan on launching it before it gets dark at Yacht Harbor (Aunt Tilly's). If I get held up and it gets dark on me I may wait and splash it Sat am.

I may have to take you up on that! :D Although, I think that launching before dark on Friday may be a bit ambitious due to the recent time change. But maybe not (since you are not towing from San Anotnio). I'll talk to you about it as it gets closer to the weekend as I am in L.A. right now. My flight is scheduled to land in Austin 2:00pm Friday but you know how air travel can go :(.

I think I'm done for the year. For me, it's time to put up the boat and break out the Harley.

Highs in the 60's and lows in the 40's... We call that "Leather Weather".

Re: November Boating on Lake Travis

I am hoping to still have a few nice weekends. The weather was great this last weekend despite what the weather reports said would happen.

Clay - Highs in 60s and lows in 40s? Is that what they're saying about next weekend? I haven't watched the weather yet. I can certainly boat in the 60s. But, if it's in the 40s we'll be sleeping in the house and not the boat.

Jason and Formula 78. My cell phone is 210-887-1766. I'd say the chances are about 90% that I'll be splashing the boat Friday night. Even if it is dark putting it in the water is easy. It's taking it out that's a b*tch. Give me a call Friday and let's get together.

I was the guy who asked you what year it was when you launched her. Sweet ride BTW!

Brent,

Hope you enjoy the weekend. I bought my Top Gun from a fellow who kept it at Lake Travis and it was maintained by Bob at Full Throttle. I had a great time on the lake testing it. I was even stopped by the local water cop for being "too loud". Nice guy, told me about Devil's Cove......nice place, go to Carlos & Charlies for a brew...have fun

Hi Clay,

Have fun on the Harley... you can always bring that red rocket to Florida for some salt water fun!

Fever Fan - Yes, that was me in the 20 year old 357 with the "hockey stick" paint job. Thanks for the compliment. I always launch there at Yacht Harbor and am usually in Devil's cove, Aunt Tilly's or Johnny Finns. If you see us come by and have a beer.

Frank - thedonz - Great handle. Thanks we had a great weekend. Except I am an idiot and I ran out of gas. (All of the gas docks on the Northern part of the lake seem to be closed for the season). ooops Bob was telling me about your Gun. I had seen it advertised there for a while. That is one sweet boat. I want a Top Gun for my next boat. But, I'll have to settle for the old Formula for a while. Too much coin to upgrade right now. I am really surprised you got pulled over for being too loud. Was that while you were underway or in a cove? Was it in Devil's Cove? It's cool that they didn't give you a ticket. I thought the only noise law on a LCRA lake was at idle speed but wasn't sure. My 357 is also extremely loud. In fact it is the loudest Formula I've ever heard. I haven't been stopped yet. But, I have the motors down where they will idle at about 500-600 rpm. It's very choppy with the cams but not nearly as loud as it is around 750-800 rpm. I also make it a point to keep my stern pointed in the opposite direction of the lake patrol when I see them. I've backed out of Carlos and Charlie's a few of times when I've noticed them sitting in there. So far I've been lucky. But, I figure it's only a matter of time before they get me and I have to find some sort of muffler to quiet her down.

Shawn - Be safe over there. We wish you all the best.

Searay Jim - That's not your 28 Cig in Bob's shop is it? This is like the Full Throttle Marina thread. Actually, I just read your post again and you can't be talking about the Cig. That thing won't be in the water for quite a while now. Well, if you need a boat fix give us a ring Friday. Bob called earlier and the 357 is ready to go.

Frank - thedonz - I still love that screen name. Where were you when he pulled you over? Just curious. I am trying to avoid mufflers on my boat for as long as possible. So far keeping the stern of the boat pointed in the opposite direction of the lake patrol has worked. But, I'm sure it won't last.

PM - I feel for ya man. I bought my Formula in Burlington, VT. Burrrrrrrrlington. I was freezing my teets off up there when I went to pick it up. All the locals were looking at me like I'm crazy telling me it was a nice day. I could sure live without those 100+ degree days down here during the summer though.

Hey, where are y'all going this weekend on Travis?

I live on the Bee Creek cove. My dock is just beyond the no wake buoys. I could load up a cooler and meet anyone somewhere, or you are welcome to come by here and meet up! I am about 30 miles by water from Bob and Full Throttle Marine, about 1 mile from Shades and Lakeway.

Searay Jim, I saw your engine parts at Bob's, just after he finished debugging the new HP500 in my little 22ZX!! Awesome stuff there!! We checked out the new stroker crank, I believe a Lunati! Did we meet when I was there?

That still blows my mind! A 540 in a SeaRay!!!!

Take care,
Kent

LOL, I know. I keep thinking about it and start singing, "what the hell was I thinking". It'll be fun though.

No, I wasn't there. I live in the north side of the DFW Metroplex.

In should have requested pictures of the parts before it went to the machine shop. :D I talked ot Bob and he described the crank as a work of art. And yep, it's a Lunati Pro. The biggest delima now is what valve covers and paint sceme. :drink:

Re: November Boating on Lake Travis

Guys - My plans have changed just a little but it may be for the better. I am going to Austin tomorrow. My step father is in the hospital at St. David's in Austin and this way I can spend some time with him. I'll also be closer to launching the 357. But, my wife has decided to stay home. She says it's going to be too cold. I say I don't care. I've boated in a lot colder weather than this. Plus I think it will warm up a little on Sat and Sun.

I've only been boating on Travis for a couple of years now. I do know my way around but not the names of most of the coves. Kent - where is Bee Creek? Is that up North? I usually launch at Yacht Harbor but I can launch it anywhere.

Formula78 (can't remember your name), Kent, Jason, etc. we should all meet up somewhere. What is most convenient and still open? Johnny Finn's and Aunt Tilly's were still open last weekend. I noticed Shades was closed. Carlos & Charlie's? Since my wife isn't coming and the people I usually meet up with at Travis are staying home it's just me. So, let's get together and have some beers. I also need to do a little flogging on my boat. I was going to pull the superchargers off this winter. But, Bob said they may be fine. He changed the lube in them. They were blowing out lube but were overfilled by the previous owner. So, I need to go out and make some boost and see if it is still making a oil mess or not.

Also, since it will be just me I could use a hand pulling the 357 out on Sunday. Formula78 I may hit you up to drive the truck as we pull it out if that's okay. I have a place to keep it nights and launching is easy enough. But, pulling it out is much easier with two people.

Anyway, I will be leaving tomorrow AM and may or may not have access to the internet over the next couple of days. So, give me a call. 210-887-1766 is my cell. I may be in the hospital visiting so pleae leave a message on the voice mail if I don't pick up.

I'm looking forward to what may be my last lake weekend of the year.

Yes, Shades is closed. I don't know why they close so early...

Johnny Fins should be open. Carlos and Charlies will be as well.

Is there a time and place when everyone wants to meet up?

Brent, Bee Creek is the second cove on the left from Shades, heading north, near mile marker 18. I am about 3-4 miles from Yacht Harbor, and maybe 5-6 from Carlos and Charlies...

BTW: Since the new noise laws are fairly new (92db at idle), most cops on the lake are not issuing tickets =yet=, but likely will beginning next year.
I have mufflers, but they are the Corsa's, which I think are too restrictive for the HP500. I'm going to talk to Bob and order some GGB's one of these days...

And SeaRay Jim, the crank was truly a work of art! You are going to have one incredible engine!

I hope to meet y'all on the lake this weekend!

Here's what my boat looks like...

I'll probably be splashing the 357 mid day Friday. Jason - If you're going to be at Carlos and Charlie's after 6:30 let's get together for a beer. Say 7:00 or7:30??? Kent - How about you? Are you up for a beer at CnC's? I haven't heard back from Formula 78 yet. Anyone else?

I'll plan on being at CnC's about 7:00 or 7:30ish unless I different. Hope to see you guys there.

Hi Brent:
Midday makes much more sense for splashing!

If you are splashing by your self, then please give me a call, if you have any trouble, or if you need any help.

I work from my lab here at my home, and am 1.5 hours away from Yacht Harbor, from a phone call. I do have really slow hydrohoists that take forever to lower. Then I will need to scrub the deck for a few minutes...

I hope your father in law is doing well!!

My wife has so far conceded the weekend to ME!! My daughter has things going on, so she is not interested, especially if I go out on the lake and drive FAST. She does not like speed. She thinks I'm completely nuts for installing the HP500 into this little 22ZX...

My cell is 512-417-4325.

Take care,
Kent

Heck, I may just take off work tomorrow altogether and go cruising around! It looks to be another fine day!

I'll look for your awesome boat, Brent! You now know what mine looks like.

I only have 1.5 hours on my engine since Bob installed it. I need more time on it, to feel it out, and figure out the optimal trim levels, etc....

Worst case, I'll be at C&C's if there is a moon out...Driving home can be hard without a moon, where I live...

I hope to see y'all tomorrow!
