28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

A good buddy of mine laid down a run this Sunday on Long Island with his 28 Skater with stock 2.5's of 124.4 MPH! Now THAT is FAST!

Damn... That is fast

Hold on now, if thats Charlies 28 Skater I thought he was running 2.5's worked by Diamond Marine? Regardless thats fast as hell for any 2.5 whatever the rpm on that boat. Thats impressive!!! I would like to know how he would do side by side with T2x being he is running right close to that but with 300x's. Meaning would the 300's pull ahead having more accelaration power, or would the 2.5's rev faster?

I find that hard to believe, stock 2.5's turning what prop and what rpm ?

I had heard he already ran 121 or something and he does have 2.5's

The boat is that fast, but the motors aren't STOCK as per say out of the box.

Since when are you friends with REGGIE? And, when did REGGIE start driving Skaters??? :p :D

How are you feeling?

34's at 8k with 1.87 gears would do it, thats about 10% slip. Need a lot of power out of those 2.5's to do it though.

How unstock are they ? How does that effect longevity ?

Re: 28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

If you are comparing 2.5 race motors to other stock outboards they are not very reliable. If you are comparing them to BBC with Blowers they seem to be normal. I dont know what he is turning his motors on that Skater but 2.5's reguarly turn 8000-8500 with out a lot of headache.

Re: 28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

They are 2.5's. I understand that he does have mild porting and that is it. Stock heads, efi, electronics etc. It is ALL ABOUT SET UP! And let me tell you, this guy eats. sleeps and breathes set up. I don't think if we took half of us OSO members and combined the time we spend working on our boats it would equal what Charlie spends on his.

Oh, BTW, T2x was there.

He has run these same motors for 3 seasons, same rods, pistons, heads etc. Runs countless poker runs and fun runs and holds it WFO the whole time at each event. This guy knows how to set up a Skater, make it fast AND stay together.

Back in 1995/1996 Reggie started driving Skaters when he had Skater lay up his race boats. i.e Drammamine, INSTIGATOR etc. Don't forget Pat Patel's old FOUNTAIN/MERCURY Cat.....

T2x's boat is fast, but not that fast. The 2.5's have a greater power to weight ratio.

He has 260 electronics on his 280 blocks which works real well, Diamond Marine does some of his work.

Re: 28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

Diamond power head's, 15" mid's, time spent dialing, and 260 electronic's on 280 head's as Ryan stated. The boat is real fast and he does represent alot. Congrats Charlie.

T2x watched......but my boat was not there....... We're waiting for Charlie to finish ...and then we'll start....... :p He has set a very formidable speed..... no doubt..... time to get to work.

Biggest speed improvement for Charlie seemed to be the kilo props.

WOW! That's impressive. I could only get 120 out of my old 21' Lightning(Skater copy) with 2.5's(offshore race 15")

Congrats Charlie.

Re: 28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

The power to weight ratio is not that diff. You have to add the trim pumps etc to the weight of the 2.5. The diff is you can put the weight where you want it, not hanging off the back.

Re: 28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

The merc 2.5 is and can be a formidable engine. The 280 is a limp motor compared to the old 260 and the drag, BUT, with some work the 280 can be a MONSTER. That 124 pass is unreal!, there was a post awhile back about 2.5 vs. 300X and I was on the 2.5 side.. it is nice to see that my theory was proven.
A HEALTHY pump gas 2.5 can make 340-350 hp, on race gas 370-380 hp. It has been my experience the the 2.5 is a more reliable engine than the 300X, even in hot rod form. The 2.5 has been around since late 1990, the are figured out. It is one of the rare motors that can me modified to make more power than stock and yet become more reliable. These motors NEED a good balancing and port job. Shops like Diamond Marine can lighten your crank, rods, wrist pins, pistons, and flywheel while giving you a mild port job ( the wilder the porting the wilder the rev's ), you can fool with fuel injection, induction methods, and electronics......... frankly if that boat ran 124 and the motors are "mild", exotic will net even BIGGER numbers.

Very impressive none the less.

Even more exciting would be a set of Alex Heldin 2.7 mercs..... 420 hp each!..... if you can get him to build you a set!.

He didn't run this past weekend. Weather was not conducive. Hopefully this coming weekend. I will post when I get the numbers.

Not at all, just trying to be funny. Anything is possible, but seeing is believing and I'd like to be the one holding the GPS, I need a good fast ride.

Take it from me Charlie ran that speed......... I was there......... saw the GPS.... and know his boat runs with mine north of 120... with normal props. He put on some skinny kilo wheels, counter rotated his gear cases (prescription for disaster for the average joe) and went really quick.

There should be more to come.... and more boats heard from.

Bottom line....buy a Skater.

In the hands of mere mortals you are correct. Charlie is one of the FEW people that run their props turning IN all the time and can handle it well. As he is a very close friend, I wish he would spin 'em out for his own safety.

dreamboater 11-18-2004 07:40 PM

Re: 28 Skater lays down 124.4 MPH RUN!

Someone please explain to me what the difference is spinning them in and why its so dangerous? I have a 28 also and spin them in, when I first bought the boats I put the props on backwords but didnt run the boat just changed the props back around. Spinning them in should create more bow lift which I know, and these boats dont really need that but if you trim the boat accordinally you really shouldnt have a problem??
