Recarpeting trailer bunks...
 

Need some input. I am going to recarpet my trailer bunks in the next few days. I want to stay with carpet, as opposed to any of the plastic runners advertised.

Should I remove the old carpeting and place new carpet directly onto the bunks with SS staples?

Can I just place new carpet over the old stuff, and staple in place?

Yeah, removing the old carpet is going to be a bear, specifically removing the old staples. Am I really risking anything by leaving the old stuff on there? Anyone done this, just adding new carpet over the old? How did it hold up? I know there is more potential for holding water, but there is now also more padding from the bunk to the gelcoat.

I did the bunks on my fishboat a couple years ago. You need to remove the old carpet. It wasn't hard to do, most of the staples come out when you give a big pull on the carpet. The rest came out with needle nose pliers. I did it in one afternoon at the lake. Changed my fenders and rollers at the same time. I bought the carpet at Home Depot they advertise for use in boats. Holding up well.

Thanks Cuda. I have found some nice stuff at Lowes to use. I used the stuff from Home Depot last time, but we started with all new bunks.

I used carpet glue vs Staples it took longer plus messy but worked good. I also got the carpet from Home Depot.

Brian.....don't do a half assed job!! Head down to Marine Depot and get a SSSR tool to get those out. Next, check the wood out and upgrade to the new Timbermans Marine grain-less wood type. This is the best stuff because it doesn't shrink when it gets wet, and you can order it via the internet and it will be there the next day. Timberman's also has quality certified pre-shrunk bunk covering too, so it's a one stop shop except for the SSSR and the SSSI tools. Good luck! :D

You can buy carpet 12 inches wide, I have a trailer place here that has it by the mile. You could go over the old, it will give a little cushion but will look a little bumpy. I did this this spring, I have an electric staple gun from Lowes, it was $19.00 and worth every penny.

Alright, I just resurveyed my trailer. There are only two bad spots. I am going to patch the bad spots, and let it all wait until the trailer is done with salt after it is done with FL this winter. Thanks all.

I bet he's one of those home improvement weekend wariors that paints over the wall sockets and hinges when painting a room. :D :D :D :D
