28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

Would you rather buy a 28magnum on the cheap and put money and time into it to get it pristene and updated, or would you buy a 28 cigarette that has already been done, and is turnkey. Both would end up being about the same $$$.

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

i would go with the cig more freebroad and the fact it's done. i enjoy working on boats but i sure like running them better. good luck with your choice

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

Do you mean a 28' Maltese? Or a 27' Magnum Sport or Starfire (depending on the year)?

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

75 28 maltese.
My friend has already bought it with the intention of not putting much $ into it.
If he paid 10k for it, he thought he'd put another 5k into it just to clean it up, change gauges and the such. Now he is thinking of turning it into a real gem.
Although he can do some work himself, he's still gonna end up spending another 20 for interior, painting and all the other stuff and accesories. let me know if I'm wrong w/ this.

I just told him that if his intentions were to have a mint boat and spend 30k, you could have bought a nice redone 28 Cig for that kind of money, and saved alot of work and aggrevation. And on top of that the cig would have better resale.

BTW... he was not looking for a Magnum, he just stumbled on it cuz it was cheap.
I think he'd be better of selling the mag now... and buying something better.
And don't get me wrong... I like the magnum, but just to keep it as a nice ride and not pour alot into it.

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

SR'r ... he bought that dark blue hull in Brick, NJ right? Beat me to the boat :)

I'd either go Cig already redone ... or even find '28 Cig cheap/project and redo. In end you'd be better off ... probably.

I would have chose the 28' Cigarette, too over the 28' Maltese, but if it were a Sport or Starfire it would have been Magnum. Just my $.02

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

Thrill... it was your boat I was trying to turn him onto.
Sorry, I tried.

nj... he is not too good w/ computers and doesn't have the time to get on here.
So I'll try to take pics and post them.
He says the boat is not in the best of shape now.
His plans...
- rechrome all hardware.
- new gauges, steering wheel and some rigging.
- paint deck as minimum, maybe hull too.
- new windshield.
- teak cockpit.

supposedly cockpit and interior are in fine shape.
I'll try to get some pics before the work starts.

If it where a starefire I would take the Mag I sure miss mine!

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

What's great here is you cannot lose with either one. As long as it's running and looks decent it should never depreciate under $20 to $25 K. I know this from all the surveys I've done on both of these over the years.
Good Luck and have fun restoring to YOUR specifications.
Don't forget to have it surveyed by a guy who understands these boats.

Thrill,
It was good to meet you at the KW party, if I had the cash in hand I'd be all over that Cig!!!!

THRILLSEEKER and magnuman...

How much are you asking for your boats?? Any more pics?? What engines/drives?? Cubes/Horsepower?? Approx. top speed?? Other updates, etc.??

I like both styles...which type are more common to see these days?? How many of each type were built originally??

I had several Cigarette 28SS and they are the best rough water riding boat in that size. They just don't load the fiberglass like they use to. :D

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

Hello Magnuman/Magnum27,

Magnuman, You have a Great looking Magnum 27 Sport

Did you drop part of the cockpit floors in you to give you a little more free board?

I had a 1973 27 Sport out of NJ years ago and dropped the floor about 8 inches. Felt a lot safer.

Thanks you Love the Lines on the 27 Sports and Starfires.
Jim

Re: 28 magnum or 28 cigarette?

magnuman,
I don't remember ever seeing that boat but then again I don't go to Clear Lake that often. Is that where it is?

I have a friend that would love to take that thing off your hands! Call or email me your 411 and I'll pass it on to him. His name is Tom Ridley. He used to run Tim Morgans old flat bottom "Morgans Flying Machine". He got tired of spinal injuries so he's looking for a usable small twin and yours would be perfect!

Jim,
The cockpit floors were dropped. This way you can stand up or sit down in the bolster seats.

Fion,
Yes the boat is up at my weekend home on Clear Lake.
I have sent you an e-mail with my contact info.
Thanks.
Eugene

Eugene,

Thanks for the Reply
The dropped floor is the only way to go with a 27 Sport or Starfire.

was in St Pete last week for the races ,
was going to try and make KW, but couldn't

Thanks Again
