eBay advice needed... QUICK

I smell scam, but I am giving him the benefit of some doubt.

He wants to buy the ring I am selling, and wants it by Friday. Yeah, I have heard that before, but what about using an escrow service? How exactly does it work, and has anyone used one? Can you recommend one?

My Item for sale:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=4950762300

Thanks from an eBay newby.

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

I've never used one, but eBay does have one. I'd be leary of using one that the buyer selects, and you can't find much information on.

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

The following is directly copied from eBay.com: (use the eBay search function and type "escrow")

********************************************
Only use www.escrow.com

An escrow service is a licensed and regulated company that collects, holds, and sends a buyer's money to a seller according to instructions agreed on by both the buyer and seller. Typically, once the buyer receives and approves the item from the seller within an agreed time frame, the escrow service then sends the payment to the seller.
Escrow is available for any purchase, but typically is used for purchases of $500 or more.

Be vigilant! Use caution when considering an escrow service

• If you are a buyer or a seller and choose to pay or be paid through an escrow service, you should only use Escrow.com (www.escrow.com), eBay's approved escrow service.
• There are fraudulent escrow services, so use caution if a seller suggests using a service other than www.escrow.com

For $5k to $6k I'd travel or have him travel and split the costs.

Cash is king no checks, (if he can write it he can cash it) with exchange of merchandise.

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

Wait, so he can put money into escrow, recieve the item, and then say he isnt satisfied and wants his money back?

*I have no knowledge of this service, have never used it, but that seems like it could be a problem?

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

If you can't meet him and ebay recommends an escrow service i would probably go with them, the only other viable alternative is a wire transfer and for him to wire you that kind of money without having a jeweler verify the ring is what you say it is probably won't happen..

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

On second thought.....I probably wouldn't let that ring leave my hand until the cash was in my other hand:) It's too easy to switch out a diamond for a nice chunk of cubic zirconium(sp) . I would fly to meat him or have him come to you and then go to a reputable jeweler together, i guess he could also have the money in escrow to show he really intends to buy it and as long as everything checks out OK he could call the escrow service in your presence and tell them to release the money.

I can fly round-trip to Las Vegas where this guy is for $300 bucks. Heck, it is $100 to ship it insured. I am emailing him and stating if he buys the airplane ticket, I will make the flight, and deliver it personally, for cash. And cash only.

Problem now is you can't always trust cash as good either.

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

if I was buying or selling an 8k ring I would fly to the buyer, go to a jewler with him, then to his bank to get CASH..(strapped so I didn't get robbed). I am going through this with a guy that won my hovercraft now.. he wants to bring me a bank check, I keep telling him untill I have CASH it is not going anywhere. CASH CASH CASH. a $300 flight and a wasted day is alot better then taking a 8k hit

Ok, Send the ring to me. I will drive to Vegas with the ring (and RedDog's outdrive), get the cash, take RedDog's outdrive down to Havasu, wait for Reggie Denny to fix it, and then come back.

(This is only funny if you saw the other thread, sorry.)

Too many pawn shops in Vegas Fund Razor, and from what I hear, you are a shady character too. I would not want you to 'Scott Sumeral' us both.

:D :evilb:  (just kidding)

Dumb luck thing is... I was in Vegas for 4 days last week. Just listed the ring this week.

Hah. LMAO.

Yeah, I wouldn't want you to Cozzie about it!!

In all seriousness, you gave pay pal as an option, why can't he do that? No credit card?

Paypal takes a couple days. He wants the ring by Friday morning, which means I would have to ship tomorrow. I don't think I can get funds out of Paypal by then.

When I sold my boat to a Canadian, I had him get a check drawn on a "local to me" bank.

He didn't want to cross the border with cash.

We went together to the bank, cashed the check, and went to the notary together.
I ended up spending the day with the guy, but then again he bought lunch.
But then again it was Subway.

I guess if I wanted to be trusted with money I should have chosen a name other than Fund Razor.

Once you send a pay-pal request to him and he pays it, it's a done deal correct ?? should take a matter of minutes.

Sydwayz 12-15-2004 12:55 PM

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

Yeah, but you can raise a stink with Paypal, and they will halt your account to recoup anything they put a limit up to. In other words, if he uses his Amex, and credits his Paypal Account, Paypal transfers the moolah to my Paypal Account, and I cash it, he can dispute the charge in two weeks, force Paypal to refund his money, and then Paypal freezes my account until I pump X amount back to them to cover their loss. Seen it happen.

I'd use Paypal, just not in a rush like this, and he suggested the escrow direction.

$200 bucks, I would not care, but this, nah, its gotta be a little more solid. I've got the ring insured, so I am protected, but I am really anal on things like this. Its gonna be really hard to explain to State Farm that I shipped the ring out in a sale process, and now claim it stolen.

Deal with Escrow.com The best way to go.

How much feedback does the guy have who wants to buy it?

I got a fake bank check for 4200 last month. SCREWED! Do anything but send him the ring or take a check. WIRE ONLY. NO CASH

I sold my Impala SS on ebay, I met the guy at the airport (not by myself) he drove it, called his bank wired the monies. I called my bank 15 minutes later it was there, I gave him the title and he drove it back to AZ.

If he is wiring the money make sure it is not an ACH. You can back out of a ACH, its alot like a credit card payment. Make sure it is a wire, verify that with your bank.

hey Brian, he hasn't even bid on it, do we assume he wants to pay the Buy Now price. i have a strong feeling you'll still own the ring come Saturday - 9 out of 10 times these rush deals I GOTTA HAVE IT NOW! are scams. Gerard, good for you helping him out - bring a gun.

Sydwayz 12-15-2004 04:28 PM

Re: eBay advice needed... QUICK

Yep, I've got the feeling its a scam. He's got my number, and I think if it was that important to have it that quick, he'd be all over getting it done.

I don't have to sell it right away. I'd like to, but I've had it for a while, wondering if I may ever trade it in, however, I can't get Dustin Whipple to return my calls for some reason. :drink: :drink: I sure as hell am not trading it in on another Diamond.
(just kidding Dustin)

I like GLH's idea on my other thread... "Should have rented it." Its got a lot of merit. Hell, I might even invest in it. Why not lease a ring for the first 6 or 12 months? Make it a lease to own. No need for the chick to know, and a good way to hush 'em up when they are bugging you for commitment.

THANKS for everyone's help.
