Go for the 2500 Suburban with the 8.1L gas engine and 4L85E 4spd Auto Transmission. Its rated to tow 12K lbs with a 4.10 rear end. I have the exact same running gear with my 2500 Avalanche, now with 25K miles on it. I used to tow 7K lbs. I now tow 12K+ lbs. I love the truck. I'll buy a dually someday, but this truck really suits the bill right now.

Fightclub:

Be smart and rent a dually from McDonald truck rentals for pulling a 38 footer. Cheaper than paying for the depreciation/insurance/maintenance on a used dually. I believe your truck is rated to pull about 7000 lbs w/ 3.73. The 4.10 is not going to get you to 12k only a 2500 w/ 8.1 and a 4.10 which I have with in my Avalanche. Plus the brakes and transmissions are much heavier on a 2500.

Alternative, upgrade the lease to 2500 and see what the "hit" would be.

Going to be towing my Formula at 8500# plus trailer at 2400# wiht my 2500 Suburban with 6.0L and 4.10 rear. Can the suburban handle the load without a load levelling hitch and just usig the hitch that came with the trailer package from the factory?

Not a chance. That hitch is rated for 5000 lbs, you weight to more than double that. Whats the tow raiting ob the 2500? If something happens and you've exeeded weight, your insurance will not pay. I had an accident towing a year ago, and my insurance company verified my trailer weight with a vengence.

2500 with 6.0 is rated at 9600#

There is no way you can tow that kind of weight with a K1500. I had a 1998 K1500 towing a 33' Powerplay. I figure the boat (fueled) and trailer weighed ~10,000 pounds. It really overloaded my Suburban. The truck was really unsafe towing on the highway. As mentioned in previous postings your hitch will read 11,000 pounds but your truck is only rated for 7000.

Now I'm towing with a 4X4 PSD Excursion. Night and day difference........

I have this exact vehicle and love it. It will pull up any hill and never labor. Gas mileage isn't too awful either - 14 mpg higghway -0nly 7 with the boat behind.

Powerguy:

GM puts cheap hitches on from the factory. upgrade to a Putnam class 5 about $160 add air helper springs and you are fine. You have the 2500 so the trans and brakes, etc are fine.
