Confused.............What is the best solution

1. Replace hitch with a 12000# rated Class V hitch

or-

2. get load distribution bars and setup for existiing stock GM hitch?

Madcow,

I have a 2001, 2500 Burb with the 6.0L. The owners manual says the truck is rated to 8500 lbs and the tag on the hitch says it is rated to 10000 lbs with 1000 lbs of tongue weight. Where do you get 5000 lbs from?

Powerguy, I opted for the weight distribution hitch to keep things as legal as I could. The Class-III hitch on the truck is fairly stout, and I keep an eye on it. I did some research, and since no one could verify that if I upgraded to a Reese Titan-V hitch, that I would be legal to tow 12K lbs weight carrying, I went with the original manufacturer's specs.

I will add, that towing with the WD hitch I have is REALLY nice. Even if I purchase a dually, I will use the WD hitch.

Look, quit wasting your time and money. For the same price you can get a loaded Diesel Excursion that will pull anything on a trailer, and in total style and luxery. There is nothing else on this planet that can match it, as far as an SUV goes.

Been looking at tow vehicles myself. Loved the Excursions. But at a Base Curb Weight of 7200 lbs, I could not justify getting one. Granted you will demolish just about anything on the road in an accident, but I dont want to replace my brakes all the time either. Currently I am bouncing between a 3/4 ton Ram with the V10 and a 1 ton F350 with the Diesel. Both will tow in the 12k lbs range.

Insurance issues asside. If you are overloaded and involved in an accident involving a death or injury, the authorities will fry your arse. You can be charged with negligent homicide ( or what ever similar statute your state has ) if there is a death and you were overweight. Something to keep in mind. I know we all do it, been guilty myself.

I have the Z71 Tahoe 5.3 3.73s posi and if you have hills, I would'nt tow anything bigger than a 27 with it, certainly no 29 twins. If you live in Florida or its flat I would run right up to the tow rating if needed, But if its hilly stay 1000-1500lb below the max. I'm towing a single Big block 26 and I would not want a bigger boat without going to a 2500HD with correct axle for the job.
My setup now is Ideal for the weight I'm towing and the Mpg is 12-13 towing
14 city non tow, and 16.5 highway non tow. I need the higher MPG because I sometimes have to drive out of town on work.

load distribution rating may be higher, But with a plain conventional hitch the max load is most likely 5000.
