The 3k thing is a marketing gimmick for quick change oil places.

CM[/QUOTE] don't think so, i have been in the auto repair ind. for 26 years and have seen many times what even going 7500 miles between changes does to a motor i would not even go this long with syn. the oil still gets dirty and at some point the filter can not keep it clean and it bypasses the filter and sends the dirt through the motor. i run Mobile 1 in my hd truck and i still try to change it no longer then 5000 miles i know the oil is still go at that point but it is not clean

I disagree. You need to change the oil because the combustion process
contaminates the oil with various chemicals. Also condensation takes place.
It would take a very long time for viscosity breakdown, even in conventional
oil. I have had cars come to my shop that lacked oil changes causing the oil
to turn so thick that it wont come out of the pan. Just open an engine up that
didn't have oil changes. Sludge everywhere. Granted, todays engine run very
clean, but as they get older the rings wear cause more byproducts from combustion
to get in the oil. I think changing your oil is cheap insurance if you intend to keep the
car.

Our BMW also has the engine service indicator. Car has 30k miles on it now and has only had 1 oil change. I asked to see the old oil. Looked like new. Couldn't believe it. Now my American vehicles oil looks dirty a week later. I'll stick to the manufactures suggestions.

over the summer I got a new 745i and the dealer won't touch it till 17,000 miles...they said the service contract will not cover the oil change until 17,000 unless I want to pay for it....its a lease so I will do what they say.

I'm a hard headed Old School guy and my dad said to change the oil every 3000 miles when I turned 16. It costs me $15 and it's cheap insurance.

By the way, I've had:
1. A 1973 Pinto that lasted over 250,000 miles (never got rear-ended and blew up )
2. A 1971 Chevelle that I ran the absolute dog piss out of for over 100,000 miles
3. A 1981 Malibu that ran for over 350,000 miles until a wiped out camshaft.
4. A 1995 Tahoe that I sold with 195,000 miles and is still running strong now with over 250,000 miles.
5. Currently driving a big block 'Burb.

I don't think it's a coincidence that these cars lasted for so long and never used any oil, but you never know!!

There were other cars, but I either wrecked 'em or sold 'em before their time was due.
