Cool Video....thats their 12.5cr engine. Runs about $13k I think.Carb to oil pan. Demon carb. Their 600hp engine goes for a grand less, same engine... less compression & a cam/carb change...so they say.

They recently redid the valve covers though. Another site said they no longer are red, or have the 572 & Chevrolet on them. Just a bow tie & I think their chrome now. I liked the red ones...

So, for you engine guys - what would it take to "marinize" something like that, and would it be worth it?

Talked about a lot here;

Car desighed engines in boats are not always good... B4M made the good point as follows in this thread.

Blower pistons are a must with that much power expected out of it...and a high quality set of rings too.
More clearance in the rod bearings for oil flow to remove heat from the bearings.
Re balancing the rotating assy...If its anything like the ZZ502 it will rattle it's self to death in no time.
If your looking for a 1000hp blower motor you better plunk down the cash for top of the line internals...not to mention a beefy aftermarket block...There is no such thing as a cheap marine blower motor making 700+hp.
I not slamming this bad assed crate motor, but it is not for powerboats...I read alot about people blowing up the 502s running them at the track.
I know nothing about detailed marine engine building but learned a bit while having mine built.

Oh, and we did'nt even talk cams and valve train yet....

That was me? Sounds like my pre-40's cocky-ness. I think someone wanted to drop a blower on the 600hp lower cr one in that thread.

well as you saw in the video they ran it on the dyno overnight. For most applications this engine makes enough power w/o the blower.

not for long  ... you'll need 110 octane or better. you wont find it at any marinas.

They did a test in one of the magazines on this 720 hp version and all they had to do was retard the timing slightly. I don't remember how much but I think it was on 2-4 degrees. Motor ran fine and still made almost the same power.

This shouldn't be to suprising. Alot of engine builders set them up at 11:1 on pump fuel being 91 oct.

I just pulled out a very tired 468 inch BBC with 12.5:1 pop-tops.

Can you imagine that Beamer with that much power?

FWIW...I have the zz502's in my boat, but they have a few upgrades   One of them being Inconel valves and different cam and springs. They haven't vibrated themselves to death yet!!! :D :drink: and I don't exactly go easy on them.

They put the 620 h.p. version in a car last night on "RIDES" on TLC. once they got it tuned right it seemed to run real sweet.

So, taking that into account - with a reputable builder - and using the 620 hp. version so you can run it on lower octane, you could have a hell of a nice motor for well under $20K? Beats the hell out of that Viper package, I think!?
