OT-Let's talk about....diamonds

Been happily married for quite a few years now. But a slight problem has come up. It seems as if the Mrs. has LOST the center stone in her wedding band. Luckily, the loss was insured. I'm wondering if any members deal with jewelry and specifically diamonds. The stone was a VVS2 clarity, I-H color, perfect cut, round, .51 carat. It was a certified stone. I paid close to 5k for the loose stone some 13 years ago. The sale was from a good friend of the family, so I'm confident that I was screwed (he's since retired). The last appraisal had the whole ring over 10k, but that was a long time ago. I was looking on www.bluenile.com today, and was rather suprised at their prices. A comparable diamond was only $1,500! Have diamonds depreciated? The insuarance agency is going to make the check out to me and some jeweler. If at all possible, I'd like to replace a couple of the other stones that were in her ring that always looked dead. The ring was originally custom made (I designed it) and I never was really happy with the level of workmanship. I'd like to have those problems corrected too. I just don't know of any jewler that will cash a check made out to them and let me buy the stones on my own for them to set. That's kinda why I was hoping there was a member or two that would be able to help me out.

I'm thinking I paid $800.00 for a .75 karrat 18 years ago, so I'll have to agree with yoy on that point. I have a friend in the biz who can probably help you on all counts here in Toledo. Let me know if you want the contact info.

Not in the business so I cant help you with the check but,
This site has some great info on diamonds and pricing; check it out
http://www.pricescope.com/
Ive bought (as well as other family members) diamonds from,
Empire Diamond, they are located in the Empire State building, have been around forever (actually one of the orginal tenants of the biulding) and will do mail order.
Greg is the guy you want to talk to.
Whatever you buy go for a GIA certificate. Atleast then you will be somewhat certain as to what it is.
Good luck.

I just bought the fiance a engagment ring this christmas. It has a 1.09kt oval cut "f" clarity Diamond. I bought it from a reputable jeweler that specializes in diamonds. The setting is 18k white gold with .75 princess cut diamonds in the setting. The stone was 4k, and the setting was 1300. I looked at some lower quality diamonds, i could have got a cheaper cut like an emerald or marquise, and got a much bigger diamond for the money, but I like round and oval.

Cord, I HAVE to get rid of this:

The total Diamond count is (37) thirty-seven.
The total Diamond ct. weight is 1.58 ct.
The center Diamond ct. weight is 1.01 ct.
The center Diamond is graded F, SI-2.

The whole ring appraises for $9500.
You can have the whole ring for $5000.

If its anything you feel like entertaining, please let me know.

I have a jeweler friend, who made this ring, who can probably help you out. He is award winning, and makes PHENOMINAL pieces for very prominent families.

Cord, your "good friend of the family" bent you over. Bobbie's ring is .65 and the same quality/clarity and the solitare with the setting and tax was less than 3k 7 years ago.

Your Insurance Co. is also screwing you over. The check should be made out to you and Dee, not a jeweler. The only way it gets made out to someone else is if you have a lien against the item. The ins Co. can't force you to replace a loss.

Re: OT-Let's talk about....diamonds

It would be best if you knew a jeweler. most wholesalers wont sell directly to you. I know one and he wont sell to me, he sells it to me through a jeweler i know for a 3-5% markup. He says if his customers find out he is selling to the public, it wouldnt be good.

I might be able to help you out here with that situation, just may be too far away.

I bought a VVS1 E color 1.00 carat princess for $4,000, but then again i stole it.

I also bought a .75ct princess h color for $700 in a pawn shop. just got to know what your looking for.

I would drop a couple notches in clarity to a vs2/si1 and stay with a good color to match the other stones in the setting. My ex had a vvs1 and e color, but it might as well been a si2 i color, they dont know the difference. color is all that they can see.

I'm gonna have to work on them to get that check into my name. I know that in the past they've made out two party checks. It's always frustrating.

Sydwaz-You know women and rings. She is definetly not looking to replace her wedding band. I wish you the best of luck selling it though. Maybe some other board member will see it and buit it from you.

Thanks guys for the link to Steve! I'm gonna dig him up and see if I can get some input from him.

In case anyone is interested. I have been in the diamond business for 30 years. I opened Steve Quick Jeweler 19 years ago. We specialize in diamonds and engagement rings with an emphasis on custom design. We can create anything (including replicas of your boat), we consistently undersell bluenile.com and get a special kick out of helping boat addicts. We do the insurance replacements for most companies (State Farm,Allstate, etc.)in our part of Chicago.

I can't help with problems you have had in the past with people in my profession. But I can guarantee you that any contact you have with me will have a positive outcome. SQ
