It's amazing that a big sub can be poised on some blocks along the keel........

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
RUN AGROUND?????????
Looks like it ran into the side of a mountain. I'd expect to have seen just the BOTTOM of the front dented a little ;) |

CNN Just released a shot of the captain and co-captain of the USS San Francisco seconds before running aground.

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Great pics. I was in the sub service for 8 years from 83 to 91. The LA class has a sonar dome in the bow which is outside the pressure hull. Looks like it hit the dome which acted like a shock absorber which must have helped cushion the blow. I wonder if the pressure hull was breached???
Somebody, or several somebodies careers are OVER!!!!! Captain Navigator Quartermaster Officer of the Deck And that's just for starters. |

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Holy Crap!!!

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Man!!!! Only one dead? You'de think doing a full stop from 35kts would wipe out most of the crew. It's a testimony to our servicemen and their hardware that that thing made it back to port with her entire crew aboard.

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Wow! I didn't expect to see that much damage. The captain has already been relieved of duty a couple weeks ago.

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Uncharted or not, that sub is supposed to have the best sonar on the planet!

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Bet they were glad to have the bulkhead doors on that puppy!

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Maybe the mountain pulled a crazy Ivan.

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
That is the crumple ZONE on the sub, opps they don't have crumple zones

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
I wonder if the air bags deployed. :p :D

Re: Ouchhh Damaged sub pics
Looks like only the sonar dome was destroyed. If it was any worse they may never had made it back.
And one sailor did die from injuries. If the mountain truly wasn't on any charts then the Navy can't really hold the captain responsible. I'm sure he was relieved of duty....pending a hearing and possible Court Marshal. Either way his career is over. An attack sub, or any sub, will always travel with only the passive (listening) sensor systems operating. If they ran with the active systems running then every sub, ship, and anti-sub aircraft will be able to track them from a thousand miles away. An attack sub or boomer will only go active just prior to weapons release. And sometimes not even then. |

From Barbara Starr
CNN Thursday, January 27, 2005 Posted: 7:01 PM EST (0001 GMT) The USS San Francisco sits in dry dock in Santa Rita, Guam. Image: WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Navy has published the first photographs of the damaged nuclear attack submarine USS San Francisco now in dry dock in Guam. The submarine's front end was severely damaged when the submarine struck an undersea mountain 350 miles south of Guam on January 8. Machinist Mate 2nd Class Joseph Allen Ashley, 24, of Akron, Ohio, died of injuries suffered in the accident, which occurred when the submarine was en route to Brisbane, Australia. A Navy official said the submarine went into dry dock on January 26. Divers cut off the sonar dome from the front end beforehand because it was "hanging," the official said, but otherwise the damage visible on the submarine occurred in the accident. The pictures show extensive damage to the outer hull of the vessel, whose front end was virtually destroyed. The inner hull was not penetrated. The pictures also show a blue tarp covering classified equipment at the sub's front end. The Navy official said it now appears the undersea mountain was not on the navigation charts the crew was using. The incident remains under investigation, and the commander has been reassigned pending the outcome of that inquiry. The Associated Press reported last week that Cmdr. Kevin Mooney was reassigned to a unit in Guam pending the completion of the investigation, citing a statement from the U.S. 7th Fleet. The USS San Francisco carried a crew of 137, 60 of whom were injured in the accident. |
