~ Towing High Speed ~

This is probably a strange topic, but how fast will you honestly admit to towing your boat? Size?

01 Denali, 29 Fountain, 75 to 85mph all the way from TN to TX.... hairy sometimes but it was rather easy.... and I only burned one tranny.... :D

this will be an interesting thread. As for me, slow... 3/4 ton 454 suburbans dont like to go more than 65-70 with 11,000lbs on the back. I have made the dallas to sarasota trip twice with it. No tranny problems. I havent pulled the boat with the new ford.

To Fast ................. or so I am told

masher44 02-08-2005 08:42 PM

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~

I didnt burn a tranny on that trip... I did prior to that in the TN mountains. If there is very very little traffic, I tend to go faster. Knoxville to 1 hour west of Fort Worth took me 15 hours including a flat that I had to change myself and get to the tire shop.
The worst towing experience I had is when I picked it up when I bought it at Pier 57 and drove it home in a snowstorm... that BLEW!!!
and it is an XL Denali

Towing my Velocity 260 home from New Orleans with a 2004 Explorer 90+ mph

Because of the gearing and tranny, the truck cannot pull the boat under 70 in OD. It can carry the OD easily over 70 or 75 as the rpm are high enough to get on the engine's torque curve. On 70 mph limit highways we routinely tow 80mph.

Excursion wiht the SR behind (7500#) 60-65 MPH is comfortable. I can do a lot more but I like to relax and cruise.

One time, and one time only. 2000 Expedition, same boat, 92 MPH. When I realized how fast I was going, I backed off. Too my surprise it had more left. Not stock suspension. It was in pursuit of a drunk that passed out and turned hard left into my trailer as I passed him.....at 60 MPH. He got caught. He had drugs. He went to jail. His bosses down south were not happy he got busted at 9AM on a Saturday morning "transporting" their product. :D His car pretty trashed, my trailer got a dented fender and broke the stick-on reflector.

Funny part was, they had no cause to search his car until he threw the beer can out the window as they pulled him over (after 30 minutes of us and another guy chasing him with no law in sight)...instead of the bag of weed on the passenger seat. :D

I may not have the fastest boat, or the coolest tow vehicle, and I know it is bad to say, but I guarantee you I have won this thread. and it cost me 5 transmissions.

Bigyellowcat,

My brother raced cars prefessionally and pulled a 35ft enclosed goose neck trailer with an older Chevy big block dually and it would pull well over 100 on flat land. Those are the ultimate pull trucks short of the commercial rigs.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~

The question is.

Towing High Speed can you stop auto, trailer, boat in time to still have anything left that is usable.

Some of you will never stopped with the speeds and tow equipment being used.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~

I pulled my 42 Sonic all the time and out on the hwy. I would run 75-85 at night 70-75 in the day if it was heavy traffic, I live on the water now and only have pulled the Nortech 50 from Fla.to here and around a bit but I had it 70-75 at night.

It wouldn't matter if I was going 50 the Nortech is so much more than my old truck (2000 F350 dually psd.) could handle if anything happened it was over. I am picking up an older F800 to tow it with now.

Re: ~ Towing High Speed ~

We can role 40,000 lb on the trailer 100+ MPH but we would need a mile to get it stoped. Or a few cars to ram into inorder to assest the slowing down prosses.

01' Dodge V-10, 4X4, quad cab, long bed, towing 311 Formula on triaxle aluminum trailer. Approx wt. 10K. Have towed it as high as 85 just to see if it would do it and did, no problem. Usually keep it down around 70, maybe a little over.

Ford F350 diesel single wheel , crew cab, pulling my 39' express cat (12' wide,20k lbs.+) , 85 mph on cruise ! :D No problem at all getting it stopped . I always have good equipment for that !

boot, yeah how far did you get on that Excursion buddy? :D :D

I had the 26' Sonic up to 92mph behind the Avalanche once trying to make it to he Richmond Radar Shootout on time; oddly enough.

We towed Monsoon back from LOTO with BobbyB's 7.3 PSD Dually at better than 90mph a few times, and I have had Monsoon behind the Avalanche in the upper 80mph range a few times. I like having the Predator Diablo Power Tuner now, as you can watch all your engine's functions on the screen while driving.

My last truck before my 04 duramax was a 02 duramax, cruised at 85 as high as 95(speed limiter) towing 272 baja after first getting truck but after getting 3 flat tires at same time coming back from hardy pond once i keep it around 75 max of 85 now. After a miserable year of pulling the 272 with 99 dodge ram STRUGGLING even with 4.11 gears at 70 mph the duramax just seemed effortless at 85 or 95 ,I gues i needed SPEED RATED TRAILER TIRES!
