They dont create as much vacuum as an air pump when a 3 or 4 stage pump is used.

JC,
I understand about the coast guard requirements and about oil being diverted back into the engine in case of engine failure via the breather hoses. But, would there be any downsides to a healthy engine not having breather hoses plumbed to the arrestor?

It probably hurts a little power by having hot crankcase air near the carburetor.When you build engines for a boat builder that is liable for his product, It has to go out Coast Guard approved.We also run a hose from the port on the fuel pump to the flame arrestor in case of a pump diaphram failure which is required under Coast Guard regulations.

on a side note,,how much hp do dry sumps take,think its more or less than a wet sump set up.

A good vacuum pump at 12 inches of vacuum or more will give you about 30 HP in a 600 cu in engine.Dry sump oiling systems give you about 15 to 20 HP.The power increase in a dry sump is from less windage and a slight bit of vacuum made.

what about the hp to turn a wet sump oil pump as to a dry sump say 4 stage?then do stages add to the hp to turn them.oh help me mr. wizard. :D

A 4 stage pump probably will take more to turn but the benefits outweigh the drag from it.More stages make more power besides more drag.
