How great a forum is OSO??????

I ride snowmobiles in the winter, so I frequent a few sled head sites as well as the boat sites. Somehow, Doo owners seem a bit more hot or short tempered than most. check this thread from Dootalk.com.... where I am also waterfoul... even though I ride a Yammy, I like this board for snow reports and such... but some guys seem to be WAY uptight!! I don't think I've really ever seen someone on OSO tell some one else to shut up and go away. At least not that I can remember. Sometimes it's just fun to speak your mind and watch the morons come out of the woodwork to blast you for it.

OK.... maybe I did stir the pot a little...... :D

What do you know about clutches? I"ve got a serious problem... come out of a corner and grab all the throttle and then wait....wait....wait....wait.... 6500 rpm and WHAM it's gone!! A real pain in the arse on the trails. And it will wind up right past the 8000 rpm redline. I know nothing of clutches. Come on over and teach me how to fix em!!!

I'm kinda having fun with that thread now.... probably get banned pretty soon.....

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

For starters do you lube your clutch ? I hit the pucks weights and rollers every time I ride..Im amazed how many guys ive ridden with that dont know about this.. Or you could try a heavier or maybe just new springs. Secondary is more important for backshifting ..
One other option "buy a polaris" :drink:

You think they are bad, try going on a few of the Harley sites. It's like there is a competition to see who can be the most antisocial.

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

I have never been into a yammi clutch. To me it sounds like its not backshifting fast enough, kinda hard to get the real deal from your post. Your saying you come out and nail it. It sits at 6500 for a wait.wait.wait then it bam it tachs up to 8000 and your gone? Or do you think its fuel related, like one of the carb circuts are clogged?

for the skidoos. They are lube free clutches. Worst thing you can do. The lube attracts all the belt dust and whatever else that will stick to it

Waterfoul 02-21-2005 03:56 PM

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

Na, it slowly builds to 6500 and then all hell breaks loose and it's off!! And we just had the carbs apart and they are clean as new. Even the air box was like new clean. Ran great in the field after we changed the needles a little.... lot's of midrange power.... this is a sudden thing, like it tossed off a roller or something... guess I need to have it looked at or get some one who knows more than I do take a look at it. It's rideable, but not nearly as much fun.

traviss 02-21-2005 04:05 PM

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

when its building towards 6500 is it bogging at all? Does it sound like a cylinder not firing then firing after 6500? I am clueless so far :D

:drink:

dude buy a doo :D

Lube free clutches ..No such thing.lots of moving parts in a clutch and they work better with lube ..which all the manufacturers sell. When a clutch is spinning centrifigul force slings everything out and away ..nothing will stick to it
All the clutches on all the sleds are a similar design ..most are or have copied comet

dude, read my lips:

THE MOTOR IS FINE. IT RUNS GREAT. IT'S THE CLUTCH OR CLUTCHES!!!!!!!

Pantera1 02-21-2005 06:16 PM

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

When clutches get a few miles on em the springs get weak ..Replace em ..If you want a more aggressive backshift get a clutch kit with heavier springs and correct wieghts ..Lube the buttons on the towers and the outside of the secondary helix .. :drink:

Waterfoul 02-21-2005 06:18 PM

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

You talking about the big springs on the front of the clutches or the small ones inside? I know very little about clutches.

Pantera1 02-21-2005 06:27 PM

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

The big main spring ..usualy a colored spring so you can tell what tension it is ..Thats the spring that forces the primary clutch to close ..Theres one in the secondary too but you usually cant see it .. Back shifting is done by those springs forcing the clutches to close ..IE weak spring = poor backshift :D

I know the springs you speak of!!! And as I'm told by some sledders, they are not that hard to replace, and are relatively cheap.

They dont have enough power to hurt a clutch :D :D

for the record. Skidoo clutches are lube free. see following text from manual. There is no need to lube a skidoo primary or secondary clutch. I don't see why you would lube a clutch. It just attracts belt dust and other foreign materials.

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

foul, you have any black belt residue on the clutch sheaves? the Springs for the primary and secondary will probably only run ya about $40 for both of them. it might just be a good idea to change them. Or like pantera said, get a clutch kit, it will come with new springs and a few other things to make your yammi get up and goooo ;)

so bored I polished my clutch cover, muffler and pipe today

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

Belt is brand new. Might have 100 miles on it. Bought it to see if it was the old belt causing my problems. New belt did no thelp.

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

I dont care what those instructions from your go cart say ..If you oil the ramps , buttons and weight pins and rollers your clutch will work better and last longer .You know im goofin on the brand thing ..I have a ski doo right outside , its completely disassembled but I doo have a doo..I had to buy a polaris to get me through the winter. Not a big fan of the cats though ..ive seen too many quality issues with them :D

Foul...I think it's a "Doo" thing anyway. As you well know I raced and rode PWC heavily for about ten years. It consumed my life. I spent a lot of time on forums like yourself discussing products, craft, racing and so on. The Sea Doo people were wound a little tight on those forums also. I actually almost fell over laughing when I read your original post....it hit the nail on the head.

Like yourself, I was always on a Yamaha. Why you ask? Easy...reliability. Something the Doos weren't known for. Nothing made up, simple fact. The Doos made great HP but wouldn't last like a Kawi or a Yamaha. I would run 3-4 yrs on a race engine. Not something the Doo guys were doing in my classes.

I haven't read your link yet but I wanted to let you know it wasn't just something you noticed. ;)

Your right about rotax reliability .. theyve gotten alot better but in the 80's and 90's they blew up alot ..When I was riding sleds heavily polaris had the best suspension ,first with good ifs ..first with hydraulic brakes and had a big 600 triple .. Times have changed and the others have caught up ..But In my mind theres only one sled with US made reliable power...But ill thrash anything through the woods as long as im ridin :D

They are sweet but the price is over the top.. The longer I ride the more I like a light sled..Ive gone from an 800 triple back to a 700 twin ..I took a 500 pro x for a ride a month ago and almost bought it ..Ya can toss that thing around and its got balls for a 500 :D

If you buy a Rev, get the 800, trust me. The 600 runs out of get-up-and-go pretty quick leaving you wanting more, more, more!!!

But you have to admit there are a lot of similarities between sleds and boats....

Both go fast
Both beg to be modified to go faster
You are always working on the set up
You're always putting gas in them
Being dismembered or killed is only one mistake away!!
Both go fast!!!

Up here in the great white north, we have to do something during the winter!!

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

Foul,

As stated above, check the springs or even the weights. From a stand still does it not engage until 6500 or is it only when you are moving and you get back in the gas? If it is only when you are getting back into it (as you are moving) it is not backshifting properly.

Waterfoul 02-22-2005 04:59 PM

Re: How great a forum is OSO??????

Takes off from a dead stop just fine.... it's when exiting a corner or cruising and then punching it that it has nothing.... I'm not going to have time to look at it tonight, but I'll be checking the springs tomorrow after work.
