$50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
Got a $50K budget and I'm looking for my first performance boat. What do you recommend ? Single, Twin, 25ft-30ft, v-hull, cat ? I would like to do 70mph. Thanks for all your responses.

Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
Where do you like to boat? How many people go with you? Will you spend any nights on the boat? How are you with a set of wrenches?
|
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
Where are you located.....and would you boat on Lakes or Ocean?
|
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
I'll be on just a few different lakes in Texas. Normally will have about 4-6 people. Dont know much about motors so I would like something I can just get it and start up. I wont spend the night on it cause I live about 30 seconds from the Marina.

Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
a 70 MPH boat in that price range will be slightly older.. and try to stick to stock power.. turn the key and go.. Mine is only around a high 50's in the speed range boat.. but it handles rough water well..
It also depends on the tpe of water you will be runnin in... You can get a flats stly boat that hauls ass, but cant go through the rought stuff all that well.. of you can get a deeper V ad handle the rough stuff great with less speed.. |
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?

Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
A 27 or 29 fountain with a 502 will get you close to 70. Maybe find a single step 1995 or so.
Good first performance boat. Lot a Bajas to be had in that price range but will be a bit slower with that same power. Checkmate might be good or an older Formula. |
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
As it is your first, and many people learn that they'd prefer something different during their first boat, I'd suggest you buy a nice condition, high quality older boat with stock or modest power that is popular in your neighborhood. I'm partial to Formula, and would suggest a 27 or 30 footer from the late Eighty's or early Ninety's. They have almost bottomed out on pricing, and there appears to be a market for them. It seems the trick is to find one in beautiful condition, and keep it that way. You can get a lot of older boat for your budget.

Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
Where are you in Texas? What Marina?
I think that the 29 Scarabs are a lot of boat for the money. Stock you are probably only going to run 65mph but that is a lot of boat. I think you could find a pretty nice one for under 50k. A Formula would be equally nice, i just dont have much experience there. This is not a flame, but on Texas lakes, 25-30ft Bajas are everywhere. |
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
27 foot Fountain w HP500
|
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
I've got a 25 Warlock for sale w/outboards for less than that, but since it's your first performance boat I would suggest that a used V hull, Fountain, Formula, Checkmate in the 25-30' range would be a better boat until you figure out what you really want in a boat, then you will know what you want and can trade up.
Stay with stock power so it's turnkey. Good Luck, Caleb |
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
What about a 22' Donzi classic w/496 HO? Brand new on trailer for mid $40k, no cabin but will run mid 70's. Great first boat

Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
YELLOW7,
I might have something you'd be interested in. I have just decided to put my boat up for sale. It is a 1997 Formula 271 FASTech (27 ft.). It is loaded with goodies; HP 500 carb (275 hours), Bravo drive, Myco trailer, Latham steering, Kiekafer trim tabs, labbed prop, two covers and a long list of additional options. The top speed is in the 72-73 mph range. She runs as if on rails at 45-65 mph speeds. The entire package is in excellent condition. It is the Manhattan color scheme; White with Red, Teal, Purple accents. The grapic is the Imron # 3 which is a stripe into a splash down the sides. As I have just made the decision to sell I haven't even advertised it yet. I am going to ask $58K so it might be in your price range. I will be posting an ad here on OSO soon with pictures. Just PM or email me if you would like a complete option list and pictures. I am in Austin, TX if you want to make arrangements to come by and look her over. |
Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
Mine. A hair over 70 mph and within the budget. 9.5 out of 10 condition. Twins, 280 K planes, hyd steering, magic brush paint, trim in wheel, the list goes on.

Re: $50K - 1st Performance Boat - What should I get ?
Looks like you have a lot of good sugestions here. Basicly, I think a 27-29' single you are looking at 6-7 years old to get it in that price range. Or, 30-34' twins 10-12 years old.
Another option for a very nice laid out boat and plenty fast is a 288 Sunsation. Good luck |

I was in your shoes a few months ago, but had a slightly bigger budget. I've never been one to get a "starter" version of anything so I jumped in to a Formula 336 as my first performance boat. I didn't want to contract 5' itis in a year so I got the biggest boat that would fit in my dock. One question you have to answer is single vs twins. Twins cost more, but you get a faster, more stable, better riding boat (more weight), and maneuverability in tight quarters is awesome. This is from someone who's had one only a short time. Even though you say you won't stay overnight on the boat, it's nice to have the option to get out of the weather, or on the spur of the moment find a nice quiet cove and anchor overnight with your sweetheart.... :drink: |
