Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
Great I was looking for this thread :D question.
Out of all your guys scoops, do they have holes in the rear to let some air get through? I heard it might be wise to put a few bigger holes in the rear to let the air out? thanks travis |
Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
I wondered about the holes in the back of the scoops too and their intended purpose? Maybe to cut down on wind resistance or to get more air in period. I don't think the ones that I ordered have them, but I think they would be easy to drill. I wish the darn things would show up some day, beings I ordered them a month ago from CP. CP if you read this, I'm growing impatient.

Wait... Let me re-phrase: "We don't need no stinkin hatch!!" Right Jeffrey? :D :evilb: :drink: |
Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
If you have a large scoop in direct path of airflow and have a boat near or above triple digits, You better drill holes in the back of the scoop or you are gonna rip the hatch off one of these days from the pressure built up in the engine compartment developed by the scoop. I seen this happen several times.

Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
I needed to dig this thread back up, since I'm now in the process of installing my scoops. I took off the padded board that's bolted to the fiberglass hatch below it. I bolted the hatch scoops to the fiberglass hatch, now my upholstery guy and me are trying to figure out the best way to fit the padded board back over the scoops to get the wood, vinal and padding snugged up close to the scoops.
I'm looking for close up pictures of anyone that has done their own and took pics of the process. I need very close up pics where the vinal meets the scoop. Also, I'm open for suggestions on how to cut the wood properly so it will lay right against the scoop. I hope someone can see where I'm going with this and offer advice and pics... thanks |

I hope someone can see where I'm going with this and offer advice and pics... thanks you probably will have to piece the wood in since most scoops are bigger on top than bottom and that will be the only way it fits tight around the base.... so your sunpad may have to be in parts if you want the bottom to be super tight around the scoop.... all depends on the scoops though... i would start with a carboard template and see if you can slide the cutouts around the scoop or not... look at the cig hatches that have scoops, i think that is what you are after, i know glh has posted his many times... :D |
Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
I suggested a cardboard template to the vinal guy and he agreed. Yes, the problem lies in the top of the scoop being larger than the base. This means the board will have to be cut into a few sections. I'm still looking for a better idea though.

Here's a look your probably trying to avoid. Boat came this way.
The ring is one piece and upholsterd in vinyl with no seams. It doesn't look like the ring would fit over the top either, but I think it was done this way because the upholstry and padding are attached directly to the hatch without it's own board. Maybe the ring was flexible enouph to fit over, and I think it hides a larger whole in the pad and how they secured it. The hatch is all glass with a 1" foam core and the padding is only 1/2 inch or so - needed the clearance underneath hatch without "pad" sticking up. |

I reinforced them with some more fiberglass. Painted to match then cut the holes out. and thru bolted under the mirror on the underside of the hatch. Didn't need to glass in because the vinyl hides it all. I tackled all but the vinyl. I cant sew. I keep stabbing my finger with the needle. :D |
Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
That really doesn't look all that bad with the trim ring. They're probably just covering up the rough edges. I'm trying to go without the trim ring, so all you would see is the padded vinal nice and tucked next to the scoop.

Re: Anybody have close-up pics of hatch scoops?
Harper, Just a thought, but maybe it could work.
Section a few peices of plywood the same thickness as the base of your sunpad, cut them to a rectangle large enough to cover the area around the base of the scoop. attach these from the top of the hatch directly to it. Measure, and cut the same size rectangle from the base of the sunpad, leaving the foam and vinyl. Cut out just enough vinyl and foam to get the whole pad to slip over the scoops (this stuff will stretch a little).leave enough vinyl to pull it through and attach under the scoop. ( if flush mounting the scoop, may need to attach "tighten vinyl" by using fasteners through the "throat" of the scoop) This would allow you to trim away only the foam you need to, and keep it tight to the scoop. Pretty tedious, but it will give you the look your going for, the only difficult part I see is getting the material tight enough at the scoop, might need to release the vinyl from the outer edges of the hatch to loosen it, and then re-stretch and attach after the scoops have been done. Good Luck, and if you see any flaws in my plan, please let me know, I'll try to help you work through them. PICS!!!! |
