Ok back to the sh-t slinging, OL vs Fountain. My opinion is that these massive egos and wallets are fun to watch, and that we mere mortals may be the recipient of the trickle down technology. It is fun to sit back and watch them go at it.

Garbrecht Dead at Age 62

By DURWARD BUCK
Ledger Correspondent

WINTER HAVEN -- Gary Garbrecht loved speed.

He once drove a reporter up U.S. 27 at 140 mph while chatting about his plans to sponsor powerboats in direct competition with manufacturing giant Mercury Motors.

He was successful in the quest.

He had worked for Mercury as director of its high performance division in the 1970s, and used his expertise in developing tunnel boats using his own propellers and engines manufactured by Outboard Marine Corporation.

Between the two companies, Garbrecht's boats won an nine Formula One world titles.

When he wasn't developing power boats, Garbrecht was spending time with his collection of revolvers or playing golf with friends.

He collapsed on the golf course at Lake Region Yacht and Country Club Sunday, and later died of at Winter Haven Hospital. He was 62.

"He had had a stroke about four years ago, but he had recovered and seemed to be fine," said his youngest son Bart Garbrecht.

The latest venture for Gary and Bart involved a partnership with the late Bernie Little of Lakeland in ownership of the Unlimited Hydroplane Series. Little's Miss Budweiser, with its multiple world championships, was a focal point of the series.

After Little's death in 2002, Garbrecht ran the series for a while, but sold the unlimited series to Trint Ling of Orlando in Sept. 2004.

He came to Polk County in 1982 and formed Second Effort Performance of Products. The plant at Lake Hamilton concentrated its efforts on the design and manufacture of propellers. He had a staff of five. Two years later, while teaming with OMC, he won a national high points championship and the offshore Class 1 world championship. He fine-tuned an eight-cylinder outboard, attached it to a tunnel boat and set a world outboard record record of 176 mph which still stands.

His collection of Smith and Wesson revolvers is said to be the largest in the world.

He spent his time between homes in Polk County and Waverly, Tenn., with sons Bart and Alan involved in his racing ventures. Alan raced tunnel boats from the smallest 45 class to the largest class. He was married to Marcia for 41 years. They also had a daughter, Amy.

"I think he retired three or four times, but he always got back into the thick of things," Bart said.

Memorial services for Gary Garbrecht will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Home on Havendale Boulevard in Winter Haven.

The driver "Hank" should be getting out of the hospital today. From what I hear he will be ok. Looking at the boat, it doesn't look like it took on too much damage either. It held up very well.
