Outerlimits Working Hard On New Speed Record The Facts
EAST BAY NEWSPAPERS RHODE ISLAND
Outerlimits' latest aims for world speed mark Like Bill Belichik in his sweatshirt, the gray, unadorned powerboat launched last week in Bristol Harbor is all business. The hot name and flashy graphics will come later. First this latest Outerlimits racing boat must earn its colors. It will do that, the Bristol company says, by setting a world speed record. Outerlimits won't rest, says sales manager Paul Fiore, until they have wrested the twin-engine vee-hull speed record back from arch rivals Fountain Powerboats of North Carolina. "It has been a back and forth thing for awhile. We set the record, they break it, we get it back. It's our turn now," Mr. Fiore said. The Outerlimits staff think they have the boat to do it in the gray missile that ventured out onto Narragansett Bay from Bristol with a roar last Wednesday morning, accompanied by chase boat and film crew. This was just a test spin, one of many needed to get boat, engine and driver tuned for the real thing. "We're getting closer but we're not quite ready to go yet," Mr. Fiore said last week. A few more test runs and trips back to the shop for adjustments remain. When all involved believe the boat is ready to churn out the necessary, 180-plus miles per hour over a measured course, the actual record run will be attempted — but it might not take place on Narragansett Bay. While lack of boat traffic is attractive, weather conditions at this time of year are seldom ideal for record attempts. It's usually too windy and, worse, there is ice. Hit an ice floe at that speed, even a small one, "and that's really not a good thing," Mr. Fiore said. An ideal day would feature flat seas, little or no wind, no boat traffic — and not the slightest possibility of ice. Their mission is to regain the record set by the 47-foot Outerlimits speedster that pegged the record at 161 m.p.h. awhile back. That was before a Fountain boat ratcheted the record up to 177 m.p.h. The goal now is to surpass the 180 m.p.h. barrier. Like Triple X, the new boat is 47 feet long and is powered by twin 1,900 horsepower Paul Pfaff racing engines built in California. A pair of six-blade forged stainless steel props provide the propulsion, and fuel is either very high 116 octane racing fuel — car fuel is about 87 to 93 octane — or alcohol. Hull construction is of carbon fiber and epoxy. The difference this time, at least the only one the company wants to talk much about yet, is that this boat weighs about 1,000 pounds less than Triple X. An Outerlimits customer will likely drive the boat, perhaps with Mr. Fiore's son, Mike, riding shotgun. They'll be strapped to their seats inside a closed cockpit and will be hitched up to oxygen and wearing full safety suits. Mr. Fiore said the company hopes to make the run in a week or two. After that — it's Fountain's turn to figure if there's a way to coax even more speed from a deep-vee. |

What the heck has he been smokin? One guy buys a boat from him and it goes fast a year ago and Fountain sets 2 more records. Talked to RF about a week ago and they got the new one running near 190mph. Fiore is goin to get one of his pansi's killed. |

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
I have no doubt that the OL can run the speeds that they are talking about, but as for OFFICIAL records, I believe the top sanctioned KILO run by OL was in the high 140's. Myself, and others, don't count that stunt where the only proof OL offered for a New Worlds Record was a picture of their On-board GPS.
That was about as official as President Elect Kerry's lead as the polls were about to close at 6:00 pm on Election day. I can't believe they have the gull to even claim that as a record. |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
As the world turns. Remember that the behind scenes the regular guys want here it . The engine builder guys will know up front, they all talk to each other.Like the last run OL did the had another engine prob
Kinda like all the guys in the marine industry that knew that National Marine was going under and didn't forewarn anybody. They new :( Like License To Thrill its going to happen |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
i saw that OL's 39 with 525 ran like 96mph.. thats moving with small power
|
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
but then again you can put 1500hp on a brick and get to to go 150mph.. lol

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Reggie is king and he deserves some respect for being in a tough industry as long as he has. I like the competition between the two but I dont like the trash talking that comes out of outerlimits. Reggie not only shut them up, they wouldnt even pick up the phone on that scheduled day.
By the way, I thought the rug joke was funny. |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
I will say that OL's 39 with 525s at their advertised 96 mph is impressive. But I am sure the boat is $600,000 compared to a fountain with the same power at a price tag of a little over $200,000. By the way, ask any dealer if they reach the OL advertised speed and they will tell you no.
|
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Reggie invited Outer Limits to participate in the record attempt last summer. Will Outer Limits invite Reggie to participate in theirs?

but the bank will just ask for 20% down and that's just 120k.. :o |

Like or hate Reggie, he's always backed up what he says, and he has the records to show it.. OL builds a great boat, but they seem to be obsessed with this speed run. Why is it thatwhen they have months of notice like the last kilo in NC, that they were a no show????? |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Reggie came out with a virtually untested boat and killed the record. He knows he has probably 10 more mile an hour in his pocket if needed. It is very dangerous what he did in that size boat and he knows that.He will probably sit back until his new piece is ready and let Fiore try at the record. If he beats it, Reggie will be right there to try and take it back.

Can't comment on the OL customer that will be driving as have no knowledge of his history. I doubt we are talking your everyday boat customer here. Let Steve David get behind the wheel! A proven driver. Just gotta let him get his deep v feet. :D Twin 1900hp motors, 1000# lighter boat............ Damn well better set a new record! If OL can't with that combo, time to hang it up. Only means 1 thing then, the boat is not capable. Might even do more harm. How many people will buy an OL just because it holds a record? My bet is zero. A person buying one is buying for the quality, 1 off custom made to order. These are not your cheap everyday boats built over nite. I find it hard to believe that will be the deciding factor for a person that is considering an OL. Maybe the $$ spent for this obsesson best spent by going back into the company? I don't know, just thinking out loud. Not to sound pro Fountain record holder here................ but a record will have a more impact on them as Fountain has more competetors that are in the same/closer playing field of manufacturs more obtainable by your everyday boat owner. Fountain, PQ, Cig, Baja, AT, Formula, etc. You get the idea. But then how many of those makers are involved in this speed title? Hmmm, and all doing JUST FINE w/o this need for the title. Maybe this claim really has no effects on the selling of boats, and is just for the ego of the Mike and Reggie themselves? Has absolutely NO influnce on my choice. Maybe I'm just not seeing the real picture here too, at which point ignore all the above. :) With that said, wish them the best. Not for attempting a new record, but for doing so safely. If you can call it safely. |

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts

For your information, the bottom is EXACTLY the same as you get on a production boat from Fountain. Only the deck is different, as is with the OL. Also someone mentioned that Reggie was ready to run 190, well not in the same boat. That boat now has 525's in it and will be run in the super V series this year with Little Reggie and Mike Seebold in it. It has been run at 107 so far with sealed engines. Testing continues to get it better. Roger

we all know about reggies past with sealed or should i say resealed motors and speed records he has been cought before. breaking the seal as we might say!

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
RF mentioned that they had to back off the sticks a sec during the 177mph run to get the water to flow up into the motors...they would get hot quickly.
Said he saw 180's on the GPS and still had some left in his wrist. BTW, RF would be the only one I would ride with in a V at 180...the old mans still got it. |
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Totally ignoring brands and egos, that last run where RF hit 177 was scary to watch. That boat was riding high and loose and waiting for any excuse to lose it. It may have taken pure skill to get there but it was luck that he did not lose it.

Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
It still confuses me that these boats competed for the same record. I think the boats should be of equal size and measure. It's like racing a top fuel car against a funny car in my opinion. 40 ft against 47 ft is a huge difference in my book, I think if they really want to compete for records they should be similiar size boats.
|
Re: Outerlimits Working Hard On New Spped Record The Facts
Kind of reminds me of a few years back in APBA when they were running a 36 ft. Skater against the rest of the fleet who were running 40ft + boats, no wonder they were winning every race except for the rough ones until the rules changed. Then again, OL could run their 39 against the 40 Fountain, now that would be an interesting challenge.
