I thought of doing that---but you wouldn't see the black outlining the letters in the black area on the transom...might look weird.

You are correct, but......the name and hailing port have to be together and readable. I don't think the hailing port would look that good on the side, nowhere to really put it on there because alot of the word racing is in the water. The back is he only logical place.
