Flushing W/ Thru Hull Pick Ups

There Has To Be A Better Way To Flush Motors With Thru Hull Pick Ups. Stuffing A Garden Hose Up The Water Pick Up And Taping It Off Is Just Not Working. Please Help!

tomcat3,
You put a "T" in the water inlet hose after the strainer and before the raw water pump and run a hose to a ball valve with a hose inlet on it. This way you can flush the strainer before you start the engine. After that just turn off the valve that lets raw water in and open the fresh water valve and fire it up.

Re: Flushing W/ Thru Hull Pick Ups

I had off the shelf "Pro Flush" from West Marine installed two (2) years ago. It is self contained and is located between the strainer and the seawater pump. It has an internal check valve to shut off the transom pick-up when the garden hose is attached and running on the under hatch flush fitting (not included). This has worked flawlessly once moved from the raw water side of the strainer. Moved it one year ago as it was trapping grass and debris in the check valve and spring asm. :D
Wasn't cheap, had to have two of them, but there are no valves to deal with and works perfectly.

This is how mine is set up and works great. One valve on the p/u side and one on the alternate input. Just don't forget to open the p/u side when you splash the boat before lighting her up.
