Trans slipping again

Need help diagnosing this one. I am running BW 10-17 trannys behind 8.1 HOs. after replacing forward clutches with graphite, new seals and rings, the port trans goes away, 3 times now. I was wondering what kind of pressure I should be getting out of the pump, and where do you tap for that test and what rpm ect. Thanks.

Re: Trans slipping again

Check your dip stick length in trans. may be to long and you are running on low oil. I had similar problem with trans. stick was cause. Good luck

Thanks but the level is good, I am thinking it may be in the relief valve but I dont have any specs to go buy, any knowledge in this area would be greatly appreciated,

what kind of oil are you running??? Regular ATF isn't good, you should be using Type-F trans fluid with those clutch plates.

Re: Trans slipping again

type f fluid and also using Huber forward clutch apply pistons

Ok so I ran the engines on the hose and did transmission pressure tests. idle 130 psi, 1500 rpm 160 psi, also pulled the control valve and dissasembled the pressure relief valve and found it to be free and in good condition, the trans that is not slipping has the same pressures, please help me before I go crazzy and buy a jet ski.

Now don't go off the deep end and buy a jet ski!

What drives are you running and do you have nose cones? Had a minor chip in nose cone filler and at speeds at about 75 mph. started to act as if trans. was slipping. Would never have guessed such a minor defect would have caused such a prob. Pulled trans. and found no prob. I can understand your frustation.

Re: Trans slipping again

yes nose cones on trs, but no prop slip, had that before and can recognize that, and on every tear down forward clutches are burned.

Here's a weird question, there were several dipsticks for the BW trans. Are you sure you have the right one and the fluid level is set properly?

Also, double check that you are getting full foward and reverse, the control cables may be adjusted improperly. I've seen that before.

Got with Huber and asked question about leval a couple weeks ago when I did the last rebuild, he said 2 qt. after rebuild and test runs ended up with 2.5 qts and as far as the linkage goes it is adjusted correctly, These are 10-17s do I need to go to a 10-18?

The 10-18's would be better but,,,, I had stock 10-17's in my old boat for about 4 years. One would slip when I ran WOT.

I upgraded to BAM 10-17 transmissions and they were rated to something like 550 hp which is right where I was at. I never had any slippage problems once I got the trans upgraded with the additional forward clutches.

Switching to the 10-18's kinda sucks cause you have to move the engine forward and it would involve more work than it's worth in my opinion.

Re: Trans slipping again

How many plates are you running? That trans should handle more than 600 HP with 7 plates. Do you have the late style plastic baffle?

Re: Trans slipping again

mark , how do you feel about plugging the small vent out and adding a longer piece of tubing with a k/n filter to the fluid fill to get better venting????

Mbam 04-26-2005 09:57 AM

Re: Trans slipping again

Unless your trans is spitting fluid out the vent it is not needed. We figured out why they spit and we do correct it on the units we modify.

nah , no spitting just asking for your opinion . just wondering if that helped the trans breath a little better that's all...

Re: Trans slipping again

I'm not familiar with your setup, but my Huber 1330's vent to plastic expansion bottles mounted high on the transom. Never saw any puddles in the bottles after I shut down to suggest something puked out there. That vent hose has popped off the bottle a couple of times. Again, nothing in the bildge. For what it's worth...
