yes the 496 has a knock sensorand I believe it adjusts fuel an timing.

Can the ecm be reprogrammed for 92 octane? can you get any hp gain from having an ecm reprogrammed? I have a 496 ho.

I am sure I going to sound stupid when I say I was running 87 octane and the transom use to be covered with black soot. even after a short run. I switched to 92 and the black went away.
Maybe I just had really good coat of wax? or is their a more scientific answer.

Yep, Dustin @ Whipple does this. He advances the timing to pick up extra hp, hence the need for 92 octane.

How about a 420 Hp carbed engine? What octane would you want to run in there??
