Re: What oil should I use for my 454
You need a 1/2 Qt filter, you can get it at west marine.
I had the same problem last yr. |

Aren't multi vis. oils not recommended in boat engines? |

Aren't multi vis. oils not recommended in boat engines? I agree with Teague if you decide to use a conventional oil use a staight weight....50wt for hot weather...40 wt for moderate weather and 30wt for cooler weather. Now synthetic oils don't break down like conventional multi-vis oils do. 10W-30 Mobil-1 outperforms a straight 30wt conventional 10W-40 Mobil-1 outperforms a straight 40wt conventional 15W-50 Mobil-1 outperforms a straight 50wt conventional. Using a straight weight causes low flow at start up...and lot of increased wear...synthetics flow and pump faster and save a ton of start-up wear and tear...and start-up is where most wear takes place they say. Why can't some guys let go of a substance that was derived from decomposed dinosaur guts and use something that was molecularly designed on a computer and made in a test tube? No dino dung is going into my good engines folks. :D |

Re: What oil should I use for my 454
Well, first oil change in mine (almost 10 hours and I'll do it sometime next week) will be Valvoline 50W Racing oil, then with a few more hours I'll switch over to, synthetic something. Amsoil still tells me 15w-40 HD Diesel/Marine, that I was running in my 7.4 MPI and currently in my Excursion, is still what they'd recommend in the 540 regardless of the difference in clearances, heat etc. I'm not sure I'm buying that. I don't think their 60w Racing oil wouldn't be the right choice either, unless I put a blower on it. :D
I've got time to figure out what to run once I have a few hours on it. |
