You need a 1/2 Qt filter, you can get it at west marine.
I had the same problem last yr.

What does West carry the Merc brand filters?

The motor has the oil filter relocation kit and the taller filter does not clear the manifolds. The filter that is currently on it is a sierra 18-7824. Any ideas what to use now?

Why not just relocate the filter so you can use a big one?

Thanks,

I believe so just check the Merc filter for your boat in the manual against my listed Merc filter if they match you will have a bunch to pick from if they match and they should.

The expesive Fram Racing filters for $14.00/ea are great the $4.99 filters are well you know :D ??

I believe because it's not a multi vis, it's a blended 25w and 40w unlike a true multi vis which is done with vis. enhancers?

Aren't multi vis. oils not recommended in boat engines?

Multi-vis conventional oils get torn up prettly badly with heat and shear. Even a good 20W-50 convnentional gets ripped apart.

I agree with Teague if you decide to use a conventional oil use a staight weight....50wt for hot weather...40 wt for moderate weather and 30wt for cooler weather.

Now synthetic oils don't break down like conventional multi-vis oils do.

10W-30 Mobil-1 outperforms a straight 30wt conventional

10W-40 Mobil-1 outperforms a straight 40wt conventional

15W-50 Mobil-1 outperforms a straight 50wt conventional.

Using a straight weight causes low flow at start up...and lot of increased wear...synthetics flow and pump faster and save a ton of start-up wear and tear...and start-up is where most wear takes place they say.

Why can't some guys let go of a substance that was derived from decomposed dinosaur guts and use something that was molecularly designed on a computer and made in a test tube?

No dino dung is going into my good engines folks. :D

And what engines would those be?

Re: What oil should I use for my 454

Well, first oil change in mine (almost 10 hours and I'll do it sometime next week) will be Valvoline 50W Racing oil, then with a few more hours I'll switch over to, synthetic something. Amsoil still tells me 15w-40 HD Diesel/Marine, that I was running in my 7.4 MPI and currently in my Excursion, is still what they'd recommend in the 540 regardless of the difference in clearances, heat etc. I'm not sure I'm buying that. I don't think their 60w Racing oil wouldn't be the right choice either, unless I put a blower on it. :D

I've got time to figure out what to run once I have a few hours on it.
