Question 94 454mag fuel pump replacement????

It looks like my fuel pump on my port motor went today, I took off the fuel line on the outside of the pump and when I turn it over, no fuel coming out.

Once I find a replacement pump, is it a pretty straight forward changeout or is there anything I should be aware of??

Thanks!!!!

I disconnected the fuel line from the starboard fuel tank where it connects to the fuel pump and blowing into the hose, seemed the tank is empty or fuel that is in tank isn't high enough to reach the outlet to feed the engine, figured this might be the problem, so I added 15 gallons to the tank and now I get resistance when blowing into the hose that feeds my starboard motor. So I connect the feed hose back to the fuel pump and disconnect the hose that runs from the fuel pump to the carb and turned it over to see if anything pumps out of the fuel pump..... nothing....

So, I blow air into the fuel filter and can feel it and some gas coming out the outside of the fuel pump.... ok, nothing clogged anywhere, must be the fuel pump.

My question, will running a fuel pump dry kill the fuel pump???? It's just funny that it seems to have failed at the same time it started sucking air from the fuel tank....

Thanks for any responses!!!

update!!! I hooked up a suction hose to the exit port of the fuel pump so I could prime it... got gas out... hooked up fuel pump exit port to carb and cranked it over.... fired up....

Should the fuel pump have to be primed? Wouldn't it self prime???

Those things take a long time to self prime if you are speaking of the raw water pump mounted fuel pump. Just my experience anyway. I just switched over to a Holley electric fuel pump and it is great!.

What's all involved with converting over to an electric fuel pump???

Where do you mount it?

Where do you wire it into the harness?

Got any pics? I'd be interested for future reference.

Thanks!!!!

I mounted mine to a aluminum plate and attached it above my fuel tank. Look up a marine fuel pump at summitracing.com. I wired it to an ignition hot lead so it get 12v+ when the key is on and then the ground goes to an oil pressure switch so the pump only runs when there is oil pressure present. There is a wiring diagram available on the holley website (as well as summit's).
I cut the hard fuel line from the carb and reflared the end and got some brass flare fittings at Home Depot to plumb a marine grade rubber fuel line to the existing metal line.
I'll get some pics tonight.

I purchased a cool mechanical pump from racepumps.com. Fewer
moving parts, you need a regulator with it though. Moves a ton of
fuel, 240 gpm can even be used w/ fuel injection.

KLM Ken,
did you order the black, blue or red holley electric fuel pump??? I'm thinking the red at 67gph is sufficient, but thought I'd check to see what you went with?

Going to the electric fuel pump, did that help with the nagging pumping to prime issue on cold starts?? I have to pump the throttle about 10 times for each engine to get them to start up. With the electric fuel pump, I imagine that you'll have fuel right at the carb at the turn of the key...

Thanks for the advice!

I got the red. It starts like a FI engine. I hooked it to an oil pressure switch so it starts to pump right after I crank the motor and fires quickly after that.

And make sure you dont overtighten the clamp. i did and the magnet on the pump inside popped off so I had to disassemble and jb weld the magnet back in place.
