What happens when Rev limiter kicks in?????

What happens when Rev limiter kicks in?????
Never experienced it but when the RPM's exceed the setting what will the engine do when the Rev limiter kicks in???? Does it shut the engine down right away? Does the engine break up, or what???
This seems like a stupid question but I really don't know.

Re: What happens when Rev limiter kicks in?????
The rev limiter will randomly cut fire to one cylinder for each rotation of the distributor. You can tell it is happening because the engine will backfire through the exhaust. Once you hear that, you know to back off.
After that, you know your cruising speed!

Re: What happens when Rev limiter kicks in?????
I have never heard of anyone suffering any damage from it. Obviously it is meant to prevent damage from over revving. One could speculate that the build up of fuel in the cylinders followed by the backfire could do some damage if it was not backed down, but again I've never heard of it happening.

Probably will never hurt anything if not ran for more than a few seconds.
I remember in the old days, the rev limiter would cut the spark to only the odd numbered cylinders. If you stayed in the limiter too long.....POW !!! Backfire through the carb, taipipes and whatever...pretty cool.

Bouncing off the rev limiter is good for throwing blower belts. That's enough to ruin your day at the lake.

Re: What happens when Rev limiter kicks in?????
Some rev limiter software is more advanced than simply cutting spark at a predetermined value. My EFI system cuts off fuel instead at a user-determined value, and then only re-activates the injectors upon reaching a lower setting. This is a surer way of controlling RPM than by simply cutting off spark. High performance motors regularly run quite close to the predetonation limits, and the engine can continue to run momentarily without spark (known as "dieseling"). This problem is compounded by the fact that the more rapid compression experienced at the high RPM's where you would like to have Rev Limit control is more likely to cause this. Oh, some motors can continue to run due to alternator feedback if they are not wired correctly as well.
