More than likely the shift linkage assembly and detent inside the back cover of the drive needs to be replaced.

Been here done that. Pull the back cap off and inspect the detent ball, All I did was clean it all up and regreased. Local dealer had a 10 day back order on them so this was just to get me by, three or four years later I still have the replacements in the garage shelf :) |

You would darn near break your hand to shift it. I pulled the back plate off along with dentent ball and shifting linkage. I took a round grinding stone on a die grinder and smoothed where the dentent ball rides on the recessed area of the shifting linkage. Greased it up and works like butter now. |
