The head gaskets on mine went bad at around 100 hours. I went with hydraulic cams when they were rebuilt.

Quiet Storm:
What hydraulic cam(s) did you go to? How much HP/MPH did you gain? Did it require reflashing the ECU(s)?
I am contemplating replacing my stock cam. I'm glad to hear from someone else who's already done it on one of these motors.
Regards,
Steve

My only concern with this upgrade is getting the ECU reflashed properly. I've had AZSM do it once, with their boost kit, and it works fine. I've also added a Whipple intercooler, and cranked up the boost to 7PSI. It's working very well.
Thanks for your input.

steve the cam we used last time was the crane #731 cam,but i think the #741 cam on a 114 would be a better choice , a741 cam on a 114seperation is a 525 cam i here ? 35 to 40 hp gain . your motor only has 10" of vac at idle now &that would inprove with the roller; so no ecm change.

Racin,
Thanks for the info. I think a Crane in the 731/741 range is the way to go too. Have you heard about any of them breaking at the distributor gear? Somone on here was talking about that?
Regards,
Steve

steve sometimes dist gears have wear from previous cam & should be replaced, also heavy oils can contribute to failure.

Steve, it's a custom ground Crane cam. My engine builder doesn't want to give the info out. He called it a trade secret. The firing order was changed and Arizon Speed reprogramed the ECU's. They were bored out to 509's. Ross pistons, Morel lifters, MSD ignition and a lot of other work. I only picked up 100 hp but I wanted reliability not power. My XR drives can't handle the power and weight of the boat now. I am very happy with the motors.

I also lost a distributer gear before the rebuild.

Racin and Quiet Storm,
Thanks for the information! Quiet Storm those motors look awesome with the yellow blocks (to match your boat) and factory blue.
Have you tried or considered an intercooler? The Whipple really woke my motor up.
Regards,
Steve

Steve
I was planning on putting intercoolers on but Arizona speed said that I didn't need them because I wasn't adding that much hp. They said the intercooler would take about 50 hp and I would need more boost to compensate for them. So if I leave the pulleys alone, it's safe just to leave them off. I'm only running 5 pounds of boost but higher compression. It wasn't easy but they did talk me out of spending my money.
Thanks
Roger
