Yep, it is illegal, but I see people, doing it all the time. I guess they don't reralize you can see much better without them, and the people they are blinding might not run them over if they weren't blinded. Primarily I see pontoons doing it, but not always.

I used to use my docking lights frequently on the boats I'd had but not for running distances on open navigable waters( the real danger is how another vessel could read what you are and what your heading is) . Most every one of those boats leaked around the lights too. My new boat dosen't have them and the cabin has remained really dry.

I use mine all the time for locating Pilings and manatee signs ...the are reflective and I just pop the lites on from time to time and see the signs from about 1/2 mile ....

A very chitty option, useless, causes you to have holes in the hull, and they look absolutely tacky.

Use a flashlight.
