I noticed that Mercrusier does not use dielectric grease in their electric connectors to insure that no water/contamination can get in to corrode the electrical contacts. The automotive industry seems to use often use dielectric grease in theirs in problem areas that are hard on electrics.

Any reason why I should not apply dielectric grease to the Mercruiser electrical connectors to improve corrosion resistance?

Interesting thread. Ive been using it for years. Even fill the trim senders with it too. Curious to hear other comments. Doesnt make sense why Merc wouldnt use it.

I use it by the gallon on snow plow/salt spreader plug ins....Great stuff

I take the time to use it on all of my electrical connections.

I use it on mine as well. Never had a problem.

Does anyone know if Vasoline petroleum jelly is a viable substitute to dielectric grease?

Merc. dosen't care about things like corrosion. As long as it lasts the warranty period, they are more than satisfied. Besides it would cost them more TO DO IT THE RIGHT WAY and they would sell less parts. Just being TRUTHFUL. If you knew the markup on some of the parts you would realize how many people are in on this ! BBB

Strange Merc doesn't use any.
I use it on every connector, plug wire, and light bulb socket.
Years ago my dad used silicone grease for corrosion/water proofing. He also applied it to all the polished brass and stainless railings before storing the boat for the winter.

I use it on all connectors, battery terminals, ab switches etc.

I have also been putting some in the end of crimp type connectors before putting the wire in. Not as good as soldering and shrink wrap, but haven't had problems with this method either.

Thanks formula 31, I will be inspecting my trim sender/limit switches and filling them with it also this winter.

we fill the spark plug caps on our 4-wheelers with it along with all other connectors.

I would think it needs to conduct .. not sure if Vasoline conducts .....Kinda like the Time I cleaned my battery terminals with WD40 ....
