GPM, Is you block zero decked and what thickness gasket are you running? Trying to decide what your potential quench distance is on the edge of that piston. Thanks for everyones input. I've never understood quench before.

Pistons are down .010, .043 gasket.

supercharged motors do not rely much on quench , they are force fed &force exhaused . boosted cyl. have there own quench.

GPM, then if I understood Patriyacht and this thread correctly and you don't mind a little increase in compression ratio you could use a thinner gasket(030) to optimize your quench.

It is true that .040 quench is ideal WITH STEEL RODS. If you have aluminum you need more. (Just throwing that in the mix)

However, .050 is ok too. When you get close to .060 is when you're getting too much space.

I doubt the 1/4 inch ring around the top of the piston will do much for quench, no matter what gasket, I could be wrong. I was just looking at Hemi heads, they have no quench area, how does that work.

More food for thought, if you do have the proper quench, does the force of combustion in the chamber put more pressure on the outer side of the piston causing more wear on the cylinder wall and piston?

Think about this - although decreased quench area can improve power, the area is designed to push air flow towards the valve area. Hemi combustion chambers are desirable because of the canted valve chambers with piston dome pushing air flow towards the valve area. Dished pistons do not usually provide quench characteristics because they are used primarily to lower the compression on force fed motors where the supercharger is pushing the air in and out. Thus quench is not important.

Quench works by causing turbulence in the combustion chamber. This turbulence reduces detonation by speeding up combustion. Some of the newer design heads acheive this turbulence in different ways, valve angles, chamber shape etc. I really don't know much about them, my AFR's are about all I can handle.

From what is posted so far sounds like the more quench the better for NA engines with a quench design combustion chamber. Other than getting to close and increasing quench to the maximum?
