Steering ram bad?

Steering ram bad?
Last season my steering was "loose". Gimbles are ok, its just that I could stand at the rear of the boat and easily turn the drives lock to lock by hand too easy. Even when anchoerd out, the waves would turn the drives back and forth. Seems like a worn hydraulic ram or something. THis is the stock non hydraulic steering. What could it be?

How's the steering when underway? Does drive trim change handling drastically? Bravo or TRS? Is the boat a handful to control at any speed?

Re: Steering ram bad?
Is this a ride guide rack style steering? How about the pump? It should have a p/s pump and ram. I've seen many racks go bad and not hold good under a heavy load. This usually is due to wear. Also check valves, and internal parts can leak inside of the steering actuator, and allow for play. The easiest replacement would be the pump. A pressure test wouldn't be a bad idea, it will let you know what's going on in the pump and actuator. I assume that you have a tiebar outside. Another thing you can check is the linkage inside the boat. You may need a prybar to check it while someone holds the drives still. Sometimes a little slop in the linkage is hard to tell unless pressure is put on it, something like checking tierod ends on a car. My friend has some fresh t/a's that had one season on them from fresh water. We swapped them because his needed too much work, only to go for Konrad's less than 20 hours later ! I think all 4 of them are still at the boat yard in the shed, so if you need parts, we should have them. Hope this helps, BBB

Has anybody ever tightened the tiller arms? There's a kit with templates and threaded plugs for the holes you must drill in the outer transom plates. This is a common TRS problem.
