Default 454 mag questions

I have a 454 mag with about 200 hours, std bore. #6 cylinder has some excessive pitting on the upper outside that looks like water damage from sitting after it was disassembled, as the piston is in excellent shape. Pitting is deeper than honing can remove. Can this cylinder be sleeved to std, as Id like to keep costs down, and all other bores and pistons are excellent.

Also the cam number is 975495. Is this the stock 454 magnum cam? The engine also came with a new Lunati 02005 cam, adv duration 302/308, dur 224/234, ,534/.559 lift. This is listed as the 525SC replacement. Will this work with the normally aspirated 454 mag?

As far as the cylinder wall damage, I don't know what the most cost effective way to do it would be.

The Lunati cam will work fine as long as the lobe separtion is 110-114. Its not the exact 525sc cam, but its close. The stock 525sc cam is 228/236, .530/.551, 114 lobe sep. It is also the same cam that was used on the Merc 420/425hp engines.

you will have to bore it 010 over on all cyl and new pistons by installing a sleeve If it was a salt water block there wont be enough of the cyl left to support sleeve after cutting for the sleeve..... just my opinion

Yes, you can sleeve that cylinder and have it bored to standard. You can also hone it to +.010 and install a new piston. Weigh the old piston to match the weight.
Be sure to dimensionally check all the pistons if you have the engine disassembled. Pistons can look great but have ring groove wear and/or excess piston-to-wall clearance. If the pistons and/or clearance are not within service limits you will need to resize the bores.

Since you are this far, why not by a set of pistons .030 over with 9.5 comp. Bore it out, have the block straightened and then have the whole assembly balanced. It will run so much better, have better compression for more power and will be equal across the board. Then do proper maintenance and it will go at least 500 hrs.

have to agree with smitty, when you cut the cyc for the sleeve the wall will be very thin because of how much you need to take out. if you bore it your better off....

but if you maintain it it will be good for 1000 + hrs

thanks for the advice. the block is going over to the machine shop tomorrow, and theyre going to take a look. Theyre slightly concerned about bore shift in sleeving #6, and will do whatever is needed. Its a freshwater block, so theyre not as concerned about wall thickness, but probably end up going 30 over on all 8 and replacing pistons anyway.

Anyone aware of the idle characteristics of the 02005 lunati cam?
