regarding the disconnect and plugging of the alpha hose - would there be a problem with just teeing it into the transom pick-up line and running both pumps? It would seem to be a nice back-up should one ever get plugged, and also still keep the outdrive cool?

I used a Johnson crank mount pump(same as Jabsco)
the big block version ( full port )with a thru hull pickup.
I installed a fitting above the drive and use the pump in
the drive as a drive shower.
