Default prop lock removal

I recently purchased a 26 scarab excel with an alpha drive. The drive has what appears to be a mc gard prop lock- the kind with the star shaped nut, and a stainless shield around it. The previous owner has lost the key. Any idea of the manufacturer of the lock so I can see about getting a replacement, or-- how to remove the lock without destroying the prop or shaft? thanks.

I have heard there are only a few different keys. Don't know if true or not.

There is a much nicer product than the McGard Prop Lock.
Please visit the website www.100mphBoatBling.com or www.PerformanceBoat.us website for the new prop lock that has a high "Bling: factor.

I understand you are getting a key but you can grind a socket to fit close enough and tap it in with a hammer and remove the lock in a pinch. I did this to my own drive one morning in about 15 minutes because I couldn't find the key. It does destroy the lock and the socket but it gets the job done.

Shouldn't be telling the world this but i'm getting rid of my locks so.take a prop lock socket it doesn't matter if its the right one or not.but it on the lock and hit it with a hammer until the little teeth dig into it which now it makes it's own slots.tthe rest is easy just turn it with a ratchet and your done.
