New style sea water pump

Has anyone taken apart new syle all brass housing sea water pump? One with single point drain system. Have 496 HO's closed cooling system. Tried to start up boat with water hose. Found that it was not pumping any water. After taking apart to replace impeller found the brass housing was badly worn. This is a 2005 boat with 98 hours. Has anyone else run into this problem? Maybe no one has noticed because of running while in water.

This pretty common with this new Mercury made pump on the 496's. This is a very expensive pump to replace. If the wear is in the cover plate, take it to a welding shop who can braze new brass onto the plate and then machine the plate back down flat and level, lke new. You'll save a lot of Dinero! Also if you run your boat in silty or sandy water, install a Hardin sand strainer ahead of the pump, pump will last much longer and after a few of these pump changes, the strainer will seem much cheaper than when you first cough up the $400 price tag. Just a suggestion.

I'l be removing the pump for inspection in the coming days. Engine as 200 hrs  Looks like I'l have a hard time removing her cause the room for working is VERY limited in my engine compartment...

Is there any exploded view draws or procedures that might help me with that job? I think the 496's pumps have a different assy than the 454-502's ?

Thanks Claude, mine is the same as yours... (Complete pump is less expensive then others serial numbers... ):D

Have you ever removed your's? I don't see a damned thing! What nut numbers do I have to remove? No 22 and 20?

I would guess, (without looking at mine), remove nut 22, bolt 14. But it is hard with just the picture. I will be able to tell you next week when I do mine.

I have read that you better remove the pump WITH the braket. I am doing mine Saturday. Do yours on Friday :D :evilb:
