525 efi oil pressure loss?
I took the boat out for the first time this year and every thing was fine for about 10 minutes than oil pressure dropped to 21 pounds and the alarms went off. Checked the oil pressure with the smartcraft scanner and it is around 22 pounds at higher rpm and around 20 at idle. Any ideas of what the problem is? Also the oil temp was around 230 with a short 80 mph pass and that seems high for such a cold day and cold lake water.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
You may want to change the oil filter. Is it a Merc. oil filter?
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
just changed the filter and oil. Fram filter and 15-50 mobile one.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Just change the oil filter before you start it again ! Let us know.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I already dropped off at mechanics. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Have you seen that before?
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Been there done that !
If your smart go down to the mechanic ASAP tell him just to change the filter do nothing else ! Start the engine Ck the preasure yourself. If its still low, oh well your in trouble. LS |
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
if it is not the filter. What are you thinking? If the oil pump was out, I would assume there would be no pressure.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
If it was ok when you put it away last fall and there were no other problem I would put a mechanical gauge on it and then check it. It may be possible that a sensor has gone bad and I have never seenor heard of an oil alarm going off at 21psi.Engine oil pressure in a big block after it has been run hard and the oil thins out maybe at 15psi.I think you have a sensor problem thats your trouble and a filter bad ??? its possible but I don't think so.Just my 2 cents worth. :drink:

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I'm going to start with the filter. What pisses me off is that I had a extra filter in the boat with me. I'll call the mechanic monday and tell him to switch filetrs first. I think lucky is onto something.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Stupid question, but you didnt have any recent fuel problems did you?? or have excessive fuel in the oil for any reason?? It may thin it out & lower pressure.. Im sure you probably would have noticed if you did.. I just figured I would mention it.. It beats pulling an engine.. :) Jamie :)

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
You need to cut open the filter and see what is inside. If there is a bunch of metal then you know what it is. There are little bypass valves in the block & the thermostat they could be defective.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I have seen Fram filter problems. Use the merc filter. One other thing you may want to check. I had 5 CMI Headers fail last year. Leaking water into engine. Only signs of problem was low oil pressure and oil temp would shoot right up. Usually after 5-7 minutes 230F ... 10 Minutes guage pinned. Merc Racing took the long block back and found corrosion clogging oil thermostat in cooler. I also would not recommend synthetic oil in that motor. I had a 525 wear a cam lobe last year and merc deined the claim due to synthetic oil allowing the roller to slide on the lobe instead of roll.
Just my .02 ... |
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I checked the oil when I was having the problem and it did not have any water in it and was at a normal level. oil temp never went above 240. If there was a problem with the cooler I would still think that oil pressure would stay up. I just can't see what would make the pressure drop from 80# to 20# with new oil, cool temps on a 32 hour motor. If a oil pump would go out, it would be 0

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I've heard stories of oil pressure dropping and alarm sounding when, after running hard, the throttles are brought back to quickly...
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?

first off you should be using a wix or a merc filter, seond the 15-40 is a little light for your mtr should be running a straight 40 or 25-40

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Maybe a dumb answer and question here. But Isnt the oil pressure gauge right in the oil galley in the block? So if the oil pump was making pressure or not, the oil pressure is picked up and registered before the oil filter and adapter. So I would think that changing the filter to try it again would be a waste of time other than to check the filter and see what is inside. Also remember, if there is something wrong the more times you start it to check stuff out, the more damage you might be doing.
I have also had a few engines do some weird stuff with the grounds loose on the bellhousing grounding studs. May not be that for you but is a place to check and see if nothing is found with the oil and filter. Good luck with that. Let us know what you have, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. John S. :D |
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Just a update. I spoke with Bob at mercury racing this morning about my low oil pressure and high oil temp after changing oil. He said that he was sure it is the oil filter. He said that when the oil filter is clogged or restricted it will kick open a by pass valve that returns oil to the engine and by passes the oil cooler. That is why the oil temp is up and the drop of pressure. I picked the boat up from the boat shop today and changed filter. I did not see any thing unusual about the filter I took off. I will take to lake and test hopefully in the next few days.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
You have to cut the filter open
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
do you know of a easy way to do that?
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
well I cut the filter apart. I did not see anything wrong with it.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I don't see anything. I even took a magnet and did not get and shavings. The oil did seem a little thick around the filter.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
any other ideas? it is a fram tg5 filter.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
GOODT told you right, You need 40w oil. I have had great use with Valvoline Racing 40w oil. I uses the Napa 1061 oil filters that are made from wix. They are painted black which looks much better than a orange filter. Pill off the napa decal and you done.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
my manual says do not use straight weight oils. The problem I'm having now is not the oil. I have not changed oil. I have always used mobile one 15-50. My pressure was around 80# and went to 20# and will peak out at 22#. I ran all last year and and run all day and never drop below 50# in july. This is something wrong, not oil thickness.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
If you jumped on it while the oil was still cold, you may have popped the pressure relief on the pump open and it stuck.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Have you tried a manual pressure gauge? I had a problem with my oil pressure sender once and it hung out from zero to 20 to 0 to 30 to 0 Etc. Changed the sender and all was well. Merc installs them down on the 3/8 rear plug that cars use for oil coolers. Try changing that, to see if the problem corrects. It has a wire with a 90 connection and hang verticle upside down from a tee.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I changed the filter and tested today. It was the filter. Pressure went up and jryan and myself drove around for a cople of hours and no problems. I will never use a fram again. I had never even heard of a problem like that.

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Good news! Glad it was something small.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I'm glad it was not anything major and I learned something :D

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I have heard of problems with Fram oil filters. On the Oil Guy website that Hydrocruiser refers frequently to they said Frams quality was substandard.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
COOL! :evilb: Great news, I have had 2 Frams collapse the element on the dyno. Thats what the customer wanted. Until he seen that happen. Now we use Wix or A/C filters. Some customers like to use K&N but just a few.
Congrats on the fix!! John S. :D |
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I had never even heard of that happening. Mercury racing acted like it was common. I have used fram filters my whole life and have never had a problem. I'm assuming that this could happen with any filter, it just happen to be a fram filter that did it to me. I'll stick with the mecury racing filters or a wix from now on. Thanks Lucky strike for info. :drink:

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I use AC Delco. $3.00 and it was rated well on the OIL GUY website. Helps a little with the Mobile 1 oil changes.
|
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
I use the delco pf932c filters. extral long, allows the system to carry one extra quart of oil and that never hurts.

I'm happy LSjr & I could help. Jr has a world of knowledge about boats & engines for an 18 year old. LS |
Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
Please help. My engines idle at 220. Minutes after getting on plane they both go to 190. If they don't drop back to 190, they will slowly climb to overheat. After overheating the starbard side the other day, the oil preasure has been reading lower. I have had the engines serviced. Seems it is bypassing the oil cooler from your other remarks.
What is the fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Re: 525 efi oil pressure loss?
first of all jamie is right first thing to check is impellers most common idle over heat problem is a missing blade or two
second has the boat "ate " an impeller lately if so try back flushing.......Third what filter are you running *******4th and most important as Ive preached many times we dont have magic glasses that tell us what mtrs year ect that you are running we need more info *********** |
