180 degrees is too hot. You should have a 142 degree thermostat and temp should stay close to that at all times. 10 to 1 compression is pretty high for the junk gas we get nowadays. Where did you get those heads? They look like early closed chamber heads from the 1960's.

I didn't build these motors, I just bought the boat last fall with these motors already in it. If I knew then what I know now, I would have walked away! I think I'm going to scrap the water setup and go with a crossover / bypass with 140 thermo.

I couldn't find that head in the cross reference but I did find this one.
12363391...96-up...oval...OPEN...Bowtie, Aluminum, Signature
Series, fits MKIV, Gen.V, Gen.VI, 110cc chamber
If you are using this head or a similar one, your compression would be over 10 to 1 on a 540. Also if this is a 4.5 bore engine, you have the wrong head gaskets. The proper gaskets are 1047 for street or 17048 for marine.

yep, that's the casting number on these heads. I just pulled the pistons out, they are srp with -3cc dish. That puts the compression somewhere around 10.4... I am thinking about getting a brodix top end kit and maybe some lower compression pistons.. any ideas???
