Block welded, need someone to grind deck
Had an early 72 4 bolt Heavy duty 454 block welded and repaired by Superweld in Farmingdale NY. The block was way too good to even consider scrapping.
This was from a customers core motor. The guy that worked on it put new merlin heads on it and used the old bolts and destroyed some threads.
To further mess things up they drilled out a few bolt holes and tried to through bolt the heads on by getting a long bolt in through the water jacket.
This water head could not get the bolt in so they ground away and eventually got it in.
Of course it didn't hold, and blew a head gasket immediately.
I had the block fixed, it had a fresh bore recently and was clean, and otherwise ok, except for a crack at one of the bolt holes.
After spending $400 Superweld told me that it could be decked with a normal cutter and that it was a soft weld.
All machine shops I have been to say it will damage the cutters and will not do the repair.
This needs to be ground and I need to find a shop than can do this in the NY or Long Island area.
Thanks, BBB

Re: Block welded, need someone to grind deck
Billy,
See if you can find someone that does a lot of heavy duty or diesel work. Diesels usually have hard preinjector cups in the heads and most shops grind them. The new CBN bits would probably cut the weld ok, but the bits cost over $200 a pop and I can see why guys are a bit antsy about trying it. I have done it with mine, but I knew who welded it and what filler material they used. It worked fine.
The only problem with taking it to a diesel shop is that some of those guys are not as "particular" as shops that do a lot of performance work. Make sure you explain to them exactly what you want done.

Thanks to Jeff (JC PERF) I am bringing to a local shop that has a mill with a stone on it instead of a cutter. This site is truly amazing ! BBB
