Thanks for the help guys. The water sat in the engine all winter (phoenix) as I did not know there was a problem. I'm going to Mexico this weekend. When I get back maybe I'll try to get the heads off and take a look around. Then decide what I need to do.

With out tearing it down he doesn't know if it's a bad intake manifold or heads but either way the block should be machined. Does this sound like my best option. Wasn't prepared to drop 6k.

That stinks...and I'm in the same situation but with a 454 magnum and 730 hours. Thought I had a battery problem...then a starter problem. Mechanic pulled the spark plugs and water puked out. I'm thinking a long block + new exhaust + whatever other parts I need is the way to go.

The first thing is to find what caused the water to get into the cylinders (leaking exhaust/intake manifold, cracked head,etc.). You can't get an estimate for repair if you don't know what is broken. The only other alternative would to replace everything (long block, intake, and exhaust manifolds). Even then, I would have to wonder, what caused the original failure , and how do I know that it won't damage my new parts  .

Hey no doubt. In my case I don't want to spend a bunch of money on an autopsy. Sometimes it make sense to get all new parts and be done with it.

My question is, do you buy a new long block, a rebuilt long block or do a full rebuild of what you have?

Make sure you get ALL new parts, or you may be in the same 'boat' as me. I built a new motor with all new components except exhaust and some rebuilt heads, and ends up both exhaust and heads were leaking water.

Talk about Murphy's law...

Sorry to hear that. As discouraging as all of this is....I am not going to buy a sailboat.

After my third try and still getting water in the crankcase, I remember cussing at sailboats....

Oh well, Because of this I'll spend more money and get more horsepower!

untill the salt water eats out your head gaskets (2nd or 3rd time out)

then you can get another one, just make sure you put quick disconnects on the motor mounts

I rebuilt an engine myself a while back. I KNOW I did everything right. I slapped on a set of rebuilt head without checking them, and I paid the price. :(

Cuda,
do u have a lot of mechanical experience? Thinking about pulling the exhaust and heads off this week. Problem is I've never done anything this involved. I'd consider myself pretty mechanically inclined. Just feel like I need to see what's going on. If it becomes too much I could take it to a shop another buddy of mine recommended. This same friend said he would help me but the tone in his voice told me he wasn't overly joyed about doing so. I don't want to put him out.
