Re: $6,000 for 5.7 engine work?
Oh yeah, took the valve covers off and springs are not rusted. Valves looked good from what I could tell. The back two rods had a little light rust (spots 2) that rubbed off with my finger nail. The intake looked pretty rusty from the exterior.

Re: $6,000 for 5.7 engine work?
Well I got the boat into the shop. I'll know within a couple days if it needs to be rebuilt. He did tell me if it needs to be rebuilt he will just replace it with a new GM crate motor with appropriate cam and springs. He said new motor $1600 vs $2500 to rebuild the Mercruiser. Do you think it's stupid to get rid of the Merc engine? I know Merc is a GM engine... just thinking of the effect for resale this fall.

Just bought a Jasper marine reman 5.7 MPI 300hp long block last week for $2800.00 with 18 mths warranty. Other models are cheaper yet. Not sure about the Pheonix area tho.

With out tearing it down he doesn't know if it's a bad intake manifold or heads but either way the block should be machined. Does this sound like my best option. Wasn't prepared to drop 6k.

Re: $6,000 for 5.7 engine work?
Thanks for the replies everyone. I already sent the $6K dollar mechanic packing. Seemed like he was trying to rip me off. My guestion is, new GM crate 5.7 with apropriate cam and springs? Or for $1,000 more have him rebuild the Mercruiser 5.7 that is in the boat now (240 hours)? I personally don't care. I had a crate 502 that worked flawlessly in my last boat (I personally put 270 hours on it/sold it with 350 hours). Just wondering if resale will be an issue cause it won't have the Mercruiser sticker on the new engine?
