Old K-planes?.....
#1
I'm trying to figure out what brand planes/tabs I have on my Magnum 27 Sport. They may be original from 1974. They look a lot like Kiekhaefer K-planes but there are no marks on them except a small "almag" cast into the top.
Any ideas?

I should know this, but I can't seem to retrieve from long term memory. I kind of remember Mel Riggs in WI making something like that. I do know that those are Mercury outboard cylinders.

Most likley, I had a 1972 27 Sport back then, but it did not have tabs when I bought it in 75. There was a guy racing Magnums back them that had a foundry, he was making some stuff too. I remember getting bronze gimbal rings for the Volvo's the boat came with.

Mercury Marine(not Kiekhaefer AeroMarine) sold cast aluminum tabs like those before Kiekhaefer came out with K-Planes in those years & for many, many years after. Although the popularity of the K-Planes took over & fewer & fewer of the Mercurys were installed at the O.E.M. level. They were called "Mercury Heavy Duty's" & did use the power-trim cylinder from their current in-line six & in-line four cylinder outboards trim system. The cylinders were very capable & easily rebuilt. Another cast trim tab that was simular in those days was offered, mostly to racers, by a company called Wolverine Trim Tabs & were available in two different lengths. They also used the Mercury outboard trim cylinder. Ed
